About the Author
John McMurry, educated at Harvard and Columbia, has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has received numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1969–71), the National Institute of Health Career Development Award (1975–80), the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (1986–87), and the Max Planck Research Award (1991).

David S. Ballantine received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1977 from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1983 from the University of Maryland at College Park. After several years as a researcher at the Naval Research Labs in Washington, DC, he joined the faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Northern Illinois University, where he has been a professor since 1989. He was awarded the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1998 and has been departmental Director of Undergraduate Studies since 2008. In addition, he is the coordinator for the Introductory and General Chemistry programs, and is responsible for supervision of the laboratory teaching assistants.

Carl A. Hoeger received his B.S. in Chemistry from San Diego State University and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1983. After a postdoctoral stint at the University of California, Riverside, he joined the Peptide Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute in 1985 where he ran the NIH Peptide Facility while doing basic research in the development of peptide agonists and antagonists. During this time he also taught general, organic, and biochemistry at San Diego City College, Palomar College, and Miramar College. He joined the teaching faculty at University of California, San Diego in 1998. Dr. Hoeger has been teaching chemistry to undergraduates for over 20 years, where he continues to explore the use of technology in the classroom; his current project involves the use of video podcasts as adjuncts to live lectures. In 2004 he won the Paul and Barbara Saltman Distinguished Teaching Award from UCSD. He is deeply involved with the General Chemistry program at UCSD, and also shares partial responsibility for the training and guidance of teaching assistants in the Chemistry and Biochemistry departments.

Virginia E. Peterson received her B.S. in Chemistry in 1967 from the University of Washington in Seattle, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1980 from the University of Maryland at College Park. Between her undergraduate and graduate years she worked in lipid, diabetes, and heart disease research at Stanford University. Following her Ph.D. she took a position in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Missouri in Columbia and is now Professor Emerita. When she retired in2011 she had been the Director of Undergraduate Advising for the department for 8 years and had taught both senior capstone classes and biochemistry classes for nonscience majors. Although retired Dr. Peterson continues to advise undergraduates and teach classes. Awards include both the college level and the university-wide Excellence in Teaching Award and, in 2006, the University’s Outstanding Advisor Award and the State of Missouri Outstanding University Advisor Award. Dr. Peterson believes in public service and in 2003 received the Silver Beaver Award for service from the Boy Scouts of America.

Mediocre Text

I had to purchase this book specifically for a college chemistry class (required the Mastering Chemistry Online component too). Having used another chemistry book several years before, I was preloaded with knowledge that made me realize how thin this text is compared to others. Much of the content is oversimplified where details are needed. Worst is the number of syntax errors in the chemical equations. Superscript numbers and mismatched charges. These simple editorial mistakes add a tremendous amount of confusion to an entry level chemistry student. Many of my peers spent much time scratching their heads rather than quickly absorbing content and moving forward. If you're thinking about purchasing this text for your own benefit (self-paced learning) skip it and pick up Introduction to General, Organic, & Biochemistry by Bettelheim, et al. If you must use this text for a class, I recommend picking up a second chemistry book to cross-reference. This book does have some strengths (great pictures, lots of good work problems at the end of each chapter, and plenty side-note information that ties the material to real world/healthcare related matters. The errors, however, make it so I can't recommend it to an entry-level chemistry student.

Mostly good

I really enjoy this text because of the organization, the simplification, and the way it uses illustrations to demonstrate important principles. I'm in Organic Chemistry now and also used the same text for inorganic chemistry last term. The only element of the text that is not helpful is all the errors. But, my professor gives us extra credit for finding the errors. So, I suppose it all works out in my favor. Sometimes the errors are typos and other times they're completely off-track. The "Selected Answers" book for the 7th edition is also error ridden. At times it gives you answers to questions that do not correspond to this edition, which is not helpful. But I do recommend purchasing the selected answers manual. It has helped me 90% of the time understand a problem due to the extended work shown or explain to a classmate how a problem is carried-out. Good luck, and have fun!

I USE THIS IN CLASS BEFORE READING TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Teaching in a primarily white school district(which is just a fact, not a problem), I enjoy teaching novels that bring knowledge of various groups' struggles, beliefs, and similarities that lead to the fact that "we are not as different as some choose to think." In teaching Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, I felt that my students felt sorry for Tom Robinson, but we needed to have a better understanding of where Tom was coming from. The two novels are very similar in settings, themes, point of view being that of a young girl, conflicts, and overall emotional impact they have on their readers. Kids love Little Man's strength that stretches beyond his size. They admire Stacey's confidence and loyalty to his family, friends, and people. Readers view T.J. with hatred, then confusion, and finally sympathy to this lost child...who can be compared with Harper Lee's Tom Robinson. Many of my students can relate to Jeremy Simms, who respects & enjoys the Logan family more than his own. And then there's Cassie, the narrator. Kids find Cassie to be the most complex of the Logans. Taylor presents Cassie as someone who is naive to discrimination(for lack of a better term). Often my students would write that they wished they could jump into the pages of the text and explain to Cassie what was going on so they could save her from further problems, as we see Big Ma do. My kids also wanted to just "give her a big hug." This book is a great read aloud & the sequels to follow are good as well. Let the Circle be Unbroken is #2 and also goes well with Harper's Tom Robinson's fate. The Road to Memphis is #3 and good as well, although I found the first two the best!

Very well done

This is an intensely satisfying little book. There is a mystery involved, and it's a decent whodunit, but for me what sets Lovers and Other Strangers apart is it's finely crafted atmosphere. Unexpected details that set a scene - physically and emotionally - with remarkable clarity and brevity. Rich, multifaceted characters aren't just delivered to the reader, but are revealed in that painfully reluctant way real people do. They're all the more compelling for their faults. Perhaps even better the book is written economically: what's there is necessary, and what isn't necessary isn't there. Like other Lanyon novellas and short stories this work punches above it's weight.

Very well done

I've come to expect excellence every time from Josh Lanyon, and this book does not disappoint. As usual, the characters are fully developed and the story is riveting. Artist Finn Barrett returns to his family home on Seal Island to recuperate after an accident. He hasn't seen his twin brother since Finn caught his brother and Finn's lover together. Finn left the island that night, three years ago. When he comes home, he learns that his twin disappeared that night as well. Finn's search for his twin makes him face his past and his former lover, who may or may not be involved his twin's disappearance. Good, angsty romantic whodunit.

Totally fell in love with the remote atmosphere of the island and the tragic hero. Romantic and mysterious, the flavor of this story is delicious and harrowing and thoroughly engrossing and entertaining.

Grammatical errors

I personally enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others interested with Croatian and the former Yugoslav history. But there is a but attached, who ever proof read this book needs to be taught to use spell check and see if the word used is the right word in context to many wrong spelling through out the book.

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed...

If you HAVE NOT read this book, DO NOT follow. I repeat: DO NOT follow. Spoilers ahead!

So, this one is very tricky. Why "tricky", you might ask. Well... many people don't know there are two fundamentally different versions of this book. I read it for the first time in 2004 or 2005, serbian translation of the "original" version. I knew about it back in 1993 already, when there were only two or three books in the series. But it just never attracted me (I lived in Germany back then, and the strange German titles for books didn't help either). So when I read it, it was hard. I was tempted to put it down. Until Jake Chambers was introduced into the story. Then I became hooked. Then I hated King and Roland for killing Jake.

That original version doesn't sit well with many people. It's strange, the tone is much different than most other King-books. It's on the edge of boring when you read it the first time. So that's why King decided, back in 2003, to publish a revised version - one that would be more in the tone of the books that followed in the series, and one that would be clean of mistakes he made in the continuity when he wrote the later books. So when I first read The Gunslinger in English in 2012 (as a preparation to read The Wind Through the Keyhole), I read the revised version. And I liked it. It was a bit of a bummer that now all the lingo of the later books seeped into the first, "innocent" one, but it made sense in the big picture.

Now I want to re-read the whole series (and hopefully, finally all the comics, too) and I took the original Gunslinger in English. And it's the story I remember reading the first time, with all its flaws, all the things young Stephen King (remember, he was 23 when he started the book, and he wrote it for 12 years. He never wrote anything that long) wanted to put into it to be cool, cryptic, myterious... And I still love it. I still hate King and Roland for letting Jake fall into that abyss near the end of the book (it doesn't matter what great things happen later in the series), but OH MY GOD the energy of the story, the big way ahead, the adventure... and with all the knowlegde of what awaits, it is just marvelous. All those connections to the Old Ones, the remnants (like the big railway station)... it makes me all want King to write stories about THAT time. Way, way before the Gunslinger and his time. But that probably won't ever happen.

This book is the key to connecting to Roland, Jake, their relationship, The Man in black, who already here, though Young King didn't know yet, had all the charm of Randall Flagg, and as strange as it is, I can't imagine a better start for the series than this. And the flashbacks of Tull, Hax the cook, Roland's gunslinger test... it just has the magic only a young, but extremely talented writer (which is in itself rare) can produce. Yes, the following books have a different tone, which changes from book to book almost, but remember, this is a story which was started by a 23-year-old guy in 1970, and finished by a 56-year-old in 2003 (the last books were published in 2004). Now you try and write something like that without having differences in tone.

I for one am grateful to sai King for having pushed us on this great journey.

And just to show off what kind of a Tower-junkie I am - I got two DT-related tattoos. One of them is pretty big.

Good but the original had bleak mystery

I would start by saying I like returning to a book I read (and reread and reread) so long ago and finding it almost literally a new story with expanded information and entertainment. How often does that happen? I don't mean like a Hollywood reboot of a beloved classic. I mean that the original author goes back and adds a few clarifications and "finishing touches) 30 years after the fact. That is worth the price of admission. But. Always a but. The original may have lacked continuity with the later books. It may have been written by a younger man. And maybe this revision is "better" in the sense that a man with more experience went back to refine it. Ok. Personally, literature and music have always been interlocked. I never wished one of my favorite bands to go back and re-record an early album. I loved the album for the reasons they would want to "fix" it. But the world isn't a perfect place. Art isn't either. And in my humble opinion, it shouldn't be. That said, I still love the series but I felt the additions took some of the punk rock, the slightly jagged riff, the out of place string screech or feedback, and turned it into something a little less. But! The additions were interesting as I have aways hungered for more Dark Tower, hell, I would read the janitors account of its upkeep if the talented and prolific Mr. King would write it. So thanks! Sincerely. I will read the new and improved but will never give up my original.

Revisiting Roland Deschain

This new edition of The Gunslinger is wonderful preparation for the film to come in February, 2017. I read the series years ago, but Roland seems somehow more vulnerable, more brooding, and altogether a more sympathetic protagonist this second time around. The book is hard to put down, with suspense deftly woven through the pages, encouraging the reader to keep on trying to grasp and suss out just Where and When this strangely familiar, yet dark world and culture are, and what rules they follow--and why. This is master writer Stephen King at his very best.

More difficult and time-consuming than the real test

These "practice tests" are much more difficult and time-consuming than the actual test (which I passed). While it is better to be more prepared than less, and understanding the concepts in this book is a good idea, beware that taking these tests might make you freak out that you are going to fail. These problems are more similar to the CERM practice problems and the 6-minute solutions problems (which we all know take much more than 6 minutes), it's just that they are in a test format. Your best bet for a realistic practice test is the one made by NCEES. Unfortunately, they only have the one...

There's nothing like doing practice problems to help you prepare for the big test. I found these problems to be a bit deeper and more challenging than the actual exam problems, which is just how you want it to be! And of course, the most important part is the solutions section in the back, to help you figure out what you missed.

With this, the CERM, and the 6-minute solutions book, you're pretty much covered for the WRE Depth section.

I was disappointed with the difficulty of this manual as anybody else ...

I took and passed the PE in April 2016. I was disappointed with the difficulty of this manual as anybody else was but on Test Day, I realized that the afternoon session was significantly more difficult than the morning session. I lifted the pen up with just enough time to make educated guesses on the questions I did not mark anything for.

So, while you have to take the practice in these depth exams with a grain of salt, it will prepare you mentally for the worst Test Day scenario.
