About the Author

Markus Varesvuo is a world-renowned bird photographer who has an uncanny knack for capturing action. While working in the business world for over 20 years, Markus ran a parallel life of bird watching and photography that began in his early teens. In 2005 he became a full-time professional bird photographer and has since written several books and received a number of awards for his photographs. His book Birds: Magic Moments was released by New Holland Publishers in late 2011 in six different languages. In 2010, he won the GDT European Wildlife Photographer of the Year award in the Birds category.

Markus is focused on European birds and works as eagerly with everyday species as he does with those that are more rare. He doesn’t photograph birds in captivity or use a flash, as he prefers to photograph birds in their natural environment.

Jari Peltomaki is an internationally acclaimed bird photographer and tour operator based in Finland. His thirty-plus years of experience in the field is evident in his books, articles, and talks. Though bird photography is his main interest, his photo library includes other wildlife as well, photographed both in Finland and abroad.

Since 2007, Jari has chaired the Professional Nature Photographers of Finland Association. His photographs regularly receive awards in international competitions and have received several awards in the Veolia Environnement (BBC) Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest. He is the director of Finnature, Finland's leading wildlife tour operator.

Bence Mate is a young and exceptionally talented wildlife photographer. Growing up in a small rural village in the Hungarian plains, a birder's paradise, Bence studied nature, his biggest interest. Most of his spare time was spent fishing, hunting, or bird watching, and he built his first hide at the age of 14.

At a time when Hungary had yet to see its first professional wildlife photographer, Bence decided to become one. He has since won numerous awards for wildlife photography, including the Veolia Environnement (BBC) Wildlife Photographer of the Year award in 2010. In 2006, he started a nature photo tourism business, and his innovations in wildlife photograph-custom-built hides, tripods, and one-way glass-have caught the interest of many photographers. In 2010, Bence published his first book, The Invisible Photographer.

Eagerly tapping into all the possibilities offered by continuous technical evolution, Bence focuses on action photography of wild birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. He lives in Pusztaszer on his farm, which is also his business headquarters. He has built photography centers in Costa Rica and Brazil.

More than just a coffee table book

My first impression was this is another coffee table book with beautiful bird photographs in living color expertly captured. But you do not get very far into the book to realize that it goes much deeper than this. The authors, three talented bird photographers from Finland, have successfully combined their knowledge of the techniques of field bird photography. While there is a section on the equipment you need, a major part of the book is about what to do once you have cameras and lenses. The descriptions of field techniques and how to capture those awesome images are most revealing. For example the authors explain how to be at the right place at the right time. How to create the right place and time. How to get close to birds that normally can be seen only from a distance. How and where to build blinds, anticipating the actions of birds, and the best angles to photograph them. They stress the importance of listening to birds and the need for perseverance by the photographer. Other subjects covered include: focusing methods, exposure, natural and artificial lighting, and how to deal with movement. Post processing of photographs is not included.
While at times I wanted more detail there is more than enough information to get you started researching a topic on your own. Lots and lots of ideas to draw from because now you know how they did it.
My biggest problem was actually reading the book. I kept finding myself reading the captions on all those awesome photographs and thinking about how I could use their ideas in my own photography. Then I have developed this intense desire to own a 500mm F4 lens. Even if you never get beyond the pictures it is still worth the price.

Wonderful Bird Images

Maybe it's all the snow in the photographs. Or maybe it's the species that I never see here in North America. Or maybe it's that the three Finnish authors and photographers of this book are the most patient, intrepid and artistic of photographers. As far as I'm concerned this is one of the best books of bird photographs I've ever seen.

Varesvuo, Peltomaki and Mate, two Finns and a Rumanian, first published this book in Finland, but the images were captured all over the world from Iceland to Brazil, and, in the United States, Bosque del Apache, New Mexico. Each of the sections of the book is written by a different author and they cover topics as diverse as the importance of perseverance and the art of building a blind. There are also sections describing some of the far-flung locales where the images were taken, including tips on where and what to photograph.

The number of award-winning pictures of both large and small birds in flight, or catching a meal, or preening is staggering. Opening the book at random, I see a photograph of a Little Bittern clutching a stout vertical reed with both feet, leaning way out over water to take a stab at a fish, and the escaping fish, flying through the air in a burst of water droplets. All of this is reflected in the water. The bird and the fish bear a halo of backlight but every detail of the shadow portions of the bird and fish are clear. One can't say this is a typical image, because few pictures in the book are typical.

The artists use a variety of equipment. There is a photograph of Whooper Swans taken with a lens set at 19mm, an angle so wide that most bird photographers would never assay an image with such a lens. But here are three swans large in the frame and ranks of other swans stretching back toward distant mountains. There is even a flight of six swans in the cloud-filled sky. Breathtaking and audacious!

One author claims that the book is aimed at beginning photographers, but I think not. There is no orderly development of photography skills. Instead, each chapter seems more like a magazine article, with them all arranged in a random order. Moreover, each of the chapters deals in very general terms. An article on sources of light suggested using a mirror to provide fill-light, something I've never read about in bird photography. I wondered if the author meant a reflector, which was mistranslated, and then wondered how to control either device in the wild. I would have appreciated a few more details, but I've been inspired to try the method and will have to proceed by trial and error.

The chapter on blinds discussed the construction of in-the-ground blinds, which take several weeks of labor for completion. I wondered how many photographers were willing to undertake so much effort for a few pictures. On the other hand, the quality of the pictures taken from these blinds appears to be so high that they might be worth the effort.

Whether it is the translation or the authors' style, many of the discussions seemed quite banal. On the other hand, a few seemed to present new approaches to bird photography. These few alone might make it worth the price of the book, even without the pictures.

However, when all is said and done, even without text, the images will thrill you.

In the interest of full disclosure, the publisher consulted me before acquiring the rights to this book. After reviewing the Finnish language book (I don't understand Finnish) I advised that even without text this book deserved to be published for the English-speaking audience.

The Handbook of Bird Photography

"The Handbook of Bird Photography" by Finnish photographers Varesvuo, Peltomaki and Mate is a great guide for both aspiring and experienced bird photographers. Seemingly every aspect of bird photography is covered: the importance of understanding bird behavior, equipment, what makes a good bird photo, building blinds, attracting birds, etc. The exquisite photography in this handbook proves that the effort and knowledge that they've used in the pursuit of unique bird photos pays off.

The wealth of information, although sometimes awkwardly presented (perhaps the translation), and the fantastic bird photos are the plus of this book. The predominance of European bird photos will distract some North American birders but may inspire others to broaden their horizons. Bottom line, if you are a bird photographer, the information and photography are rock solid.

Dean "The Ratchet" Koontz

As I read this novel I just kept thinking to myself that no one takes a bad, awful situation, and then makes it shockingly worse, better than Dean Koontz. When you think things are as bad as they can get, he ratchets down and you realize just how wrong you are. Things can get much worse, oh indeedy. Then, of course, he defies your comprehension and makes it worse again, and then again. Koontz does escalating tension and events better than anyone, and does it with such deceptively simple writing that his stories feel like terrifying roller-coaster rides: the hair curling build-up of tension, the shrieking plunge into depths of despair and hopelessness, then the shocking, violent twists and turns, and finally, heart-pounding and breast heaving, you safely glide to a controlled stop and the safe normal world you are accustomed to can resume again.

In The Husband, a simple gardener is interrupted while working by a cell call. His wife says she loves him and then abruptly screams in pain. A merciless voice comes on and informs him that they have his wife and they want $2 million. He only has $11,000 in his checking. Events unfold rapidly from there, and, as I said above, things slide from awful and impossible, to horrfyingly worse, through many lightning quick, and equally shocking, plot twists. Details about the kidnappers and Mitch's strange family are parceled out in tantalizing bits and pieces which make the bizarre and incomprehensible beginnings finally make sense.

Mr. Koontz has focused on themes of love, goodness, family, and kindness confronting evil, despair, and self-interest in many of his recent books and this one is no exception. A good man, who truly loves his wife, is called upon to face the unthinkable, contend with evil more complex than simple kidnappers, and confront his past in a haunting, complex story that is a well-told, lovingly crafted page turner. This is a story of goodness, love, and hope, beset on all sides by evil, deceit, maliciousness, and despair and a couple who must persevere and face these things head on in order to triumph. I really enjoyed this novel as I have many of his previous ones like the Odd Thomas duo and Life Expectancy. This is in the same vein as those novels. I didn't much like Intensity, perhaps because it didn't follow the same formula as these other novels. If you enjoyed Life Expectancy and Odd Thomas though you'll be sure to enjoy this one from Koontz too.

Always a good read

Once again, Mr. Koontz has given us a wonderful rollercoaster ride of action and suspense. The story opens with an outstanding scene in which an ordinary, nice man, owner of a small two-man landscaping business, is called on his cell and told that his wife has been kidnapped. A bystander is shot to show that the kidnappers are watching and mean business. And they expect Mitch, the main character, to obtain 2million dollars within a few days to get his wife back. It seems an impossible task. Along the way, Mitch meets with terrible betrayals as we learn his compelling family history, while his wife deals with strange, strange kidnappers. I don't want to say much more, lest I give away too much. But I do recommend this book highly. I bought it at 6pm last night and couldn't go to bed till I was finished reading it! It will keep you turning the pages anxiously trying to find out what will happen next!

Old recipe, ethnic infusion.

If there was ever a writer that understood how people's fates were inextricably tied to their land, it was Steinbeck. The familiar setting of Monterrey county introduces us to a new cast of characters, pulled together by the gravity of their birthplace. Early on, one gets that feeling that the misadventures in which Danny and his friends partake, could take place in Tortilla Flat, and nowhere else.

Like Mallory’s story of King Arthur and the knights of the round table, Tortilla Flat has its heroes, quests, damsels, and holy grail. That is the original recipe. Add beans, paisanos, “lively” women, and a whole lot of wine. Simmer and reduce. The result is a rich, yet simple and savory tale; literary comfort food for those who have visited this land before through Steinbeck’s prose. Those that long for it.

Who knew that this one valley in California would be the well to spring forth the tragic drama of the ‘Grapes of Wrath’, the biblical struggle of ‘East of Eden’, the love and friendship of ‘Cannery Row’, the Arthurian romance of ‘Tortilla’ and…well, the man himself.

And no, I am not putting the ‘cart before the horse’. These tales, these elemental forces were there long before Steinbeck allowed his artistic sensibilities to be threaded by them. And will continue to roam this land, perhaps in different finery, but eternal all the same.

Hail Knights of the Woeful Countenance

If as others have suggested John Steinbeck's Tortilla Flats is built around the Arthurian legends these are not latter-day noble Knights of the Round Table recast as down and out, hard luck, lower-class Californians. Rather these are the men who would have shared a tankard or three with likes of Don Quixote's Sancho Panza or Shakespeare's Falstaff.

The story cycle in Tortilla Flats centers around a mostly hapless, selfish, drunken, thieving, and occasionally noble group of paisano's in the unpaved and occasionally patrolled outer reaches of Monterrey, California in the years after World War I. For those looking to charge racial stereotypes; the central characters include Danny, Pilon, Jesus Marie, Big Joe Portagee and the Pirate. No one is clearly identified with any one racial type and we are told these are a mix of Native Americans, Hispanics, Italians, Anglos and combinations thereof. Mostly what our main characters have in common is an over fondness for wine and a disinterest in work or anything that looks like achieving the American dream. The novel itself is early Steinbeck and may be considered as something of an experiment in storytelling that he will perfect in Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday.

In choosing to tell us the stories of this barely lovable group of schemers and drinkers, Steinbeck is working an aspect common in many cultures from the misdeeds of the Hopi Mud Head Kachinas to the antics of the Three Stooges. We can identify with this ignoble band of Brothers in part because they allow us to be naughty at one remove and because we can identify with people who are hapless without being evil.

Tortilla Flats is not so much a novel as a cycle of short stories built around the misadventures, sacred superstitions, and wine based brotherhood of its central characters. Around the core characters we have a variety of equally comedic bumbler's including: women of flexible virtue, barter-based wine bootleggers and at least one jailer who qualifies for the job by being its most frequent prisoners - until her forgets he is the jailor and leads an escape. None of these people or events is meant to be taken seriously. Steinbeck has invited us to savor complex schemes as designed by simple folk whose only real loyalty is to each other and when pressed their immediate community.

My initial reaction to Steinbeck's Tortilla Flats was negative. Initially I did not like any of the paisanos. Once I realized this was all intended as humor and that it was part of a larger literary tradition I came to enjoy the efforts of these characters to provide for each other without surrendering to their own weaknesses. My change of heart could not have happened except for the simple yet skillful use of language that ultimately seduced me and made me into being a fan of this book.

Two inches farther down, sweetly sad memory. Three inches more, thoughts of old and satisfactory loves. An inch, thoughts of bitter loves. Bottom of the first jug, general and undirected sadness. Shoulder of the second jug, black, unholy despondency. Two fingers down, a song of death or longing. A thumb, every other song each one knows. The graduations stop here, for the trail splits and there is no certainty. From this point anything can happen.”

David Fiderer is a genius and it shows. This is a must read.

David Fiderer has been the sword of truth cutting through the untruths of those looking to destroy two of the most American businesses in existence, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Throughout this book David uses publicly available facts to lay out before the reader in open arms fashion the harsh realities of the world that we live in, that the people that gravitate to positions of power don't always use those positions to benefit the world around them.

Fanniegate is the name of this $5 trillion dollar scape goat where the government has engaged in self dealing committing fraud and bold faced lying in order to make themselves look good at the expense of the housing market that makes home ownership a possibility for millions of Americans.

An utterly fantastic book exposing the corruption of the TBTF banks, the incompetence of D.C. and the stupidity of the media. I am also worried for my children because they will have to deal with this corrosively dark power. I would rate this book Ten Stars. Everybody should read this book and organize to take the country back.

Fiderer Nails Them and the American Public Needs to Understand Just Why and How

An extremely well researched, provocative, and defining history of the ill treatment of mortgage finance ramparts Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac clumsily delivered by government officials, regulatory agencies, and the media.

Fiderer strikes away the glib mask from former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson's 2008 manipulation of the law, while the Cabinet member misled the Congress and the American people about the conditions of Fannie and Freddie.

Hank Paulson also gave insider information, long before it became public, to Wall Street allies allowing them to profit on his--ultimately unsuccessful--plans to shutter F&F behind the rules of " conservatorship."

Do government officials lie and distort? Fiderer thunderingly says "Yes."
