After a lifetime of harboring shame and resentment, Christopher, a ruthless con artist, wants revenge, and unfortunately for Anna, he’s decided that she will be the perfect pawn in his terrible plot. Much Ado About Nothing
By Gabby R
I have noticed that whenever a book contains a woman and rape, people expect all women to react to this horrible situation in the same way. I read this book because of the negative comments rather than the positive ones. Some of the best stories (and I have read thousands and thousands) make you uncomfortable and upset. Fatal flaws exist in everyone, and I found it interesting that the author spent a good deal of time exploring the flaws in almost every main character in the book. Are there not women in reality that love and defend their oppressors? Is it so difficult to believe that a woman of this time was raped? That she would put this terrible thing aside for the sake of her family? That the intimacy of marriage would give her the opportunity to see the tiny bit of good in a remarkably flawed man? That in this time period women had fewer choices? All of the major characters of this book who were married women had awful marriages or treated their marriage in an awful way. This should not surprise or intimate or rankle anyone. I believe this book is meant to make you squirm some. That is its purpose.

Modern Edge on a Classic Story
By Tessa S.
I just finished Lemonade. I couldn't put it down!

Since I'm a huge fan of Jane Austen, I wasn't sure I would like it. The story is definitely twisted, but I loved the modern take on the classic courtship and marriage plot found in nineteenth century novels. There is sex and violence, but you really have to read the novel to the end to see how the characters develop and the problems of the text are resolved (or not!). Warning: this is NOT some sanitized re-telling of Pride and Prejudice, since it also has a dark side, not unlike Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles.

You'll appreciate the complicated dynamics of the book if you like Fifty Shades of Grey, or even Law & Order, SVU! At times there is first-person narration (provided in italics) along with occasional omniscient narrator comments (in parentheses) that make the storytelling fresh and really push the action along. The book is never boring, and I really got invested in the fate of the characters.

I strongly recommend Lemonade, especially if you like a classic with an edge!

Denial - spoilers included below

I am good at hiding my head in the sand and accepting bad things when I read a romance story. It is not real life and so I feel to act that way is perfectly acceptable and my choice. There are some things I cannot and won't ignore in books and will ruin a book for me. The result is that I will stop reading. There are other things that I dislike romance such as rape and physical abuse that I can accept under certain circumstances. Those circumstances are if the abuse and rape is limited and temporary. Here the hero raped the heroine and slapped her while it occurs. However the abuse was limited to one time and the hero was remorseful. I disliked that it occurred but I did not stop reading the story because other than that it was a good & interesting book. Also I skipped over that part.

I also dislike cheating. Here the main characters got married but did not consummate it right away. During that time OM who was in love with her made a remark that the hero was cheating on her. However no scenes showed that and no other references were made and so in my mind it did not happen. I choose believe that he was referring to a hookup the hero had after meeting and kissing the heroine but before the marriage. While I disliked that scene they were not married at the time and she had no feelings for him then. Also he did not enjoy it because he could not stop thinking of her and it was referenced as opposed to the reading watching it occur. If there was a cheating scene or confirmation of it after marriage then I would have stopped reading. Also if there was any more physical abuse I would have stopped reading as well.

This is one of the select few books that I wish the heroine end up with someone other that the hero. He was a jackjerk who used his childhood near rape and neglect as an excuse to treat other like dirt including her. The OM who she kissed once before she was married was 100 times a better man and worthy of her. She should have ended up with him or someone like him as opposed to the selfish, cruel and rapist hero.

The story had a HFN ending. However I wanted a HEA one with an epilogue years in the future. Because their relationship was filed with so much drama and conflicts and the hero was such a jackjerk it needed those things for me to believe they ended up together.
