This book is a great read.

I received and autographed copy of this book by the author earlier this year. It is a great book for investors that are new to NNN commercial real estate. This is a great book that will give you invaluable information in the steps that are needed to successfully invest in commercial real estate. The book will explain to the readers why NNN real estate is a great way to attain financial freedom, the importance of having quality relationships in the real estate investing field. The book also goes into what 1031 exchange is. This book is a must have for new commercial real estate investors.

Good low cost intro book but no depth when it comes to deal evaluation.

Even though I gave it only 3 stars, I bought extra copies since the book cost so little and I gave those copies to other members of my family.
The book is a good intro to NNN and provides good legal ramifications, good 1031 exchange rules explanation.
However when it comes to what I think is the most important part in such NNN purchases and that is how to evaluate NNN properties and property types such as food, drugs, thrift shop etc, there is no exposition.
The book tells you to rely on a good broker for such advice. Good luck.

!A must read if you are looking to sleep well at night

My husband and I were concerned about the lackluster performance of our portfolio and have been searching for ways to assure a comfortable retirement. We came across Alan's book this past spring, and I am thrilled to report that after following the advice laid out (in terms we could understand) we closed yesterday on a NNN property and are free of the worry from market fluctuation. Every person we dealt with from finding the right property, to the initial steps and all the way through to closing the transaction were professional, patient, and extremely helpful. Being able to talk with Alan was a huge plus for us as well. This is a solid book for anyone who wants to sleep well at night!

Astrology students need this book

How this book ever got out of print for a minute I do not know. All students of astrology need Demetra in their bookshelf and on their desk. An understanding of the asteroid goddesses is a way to add an entire new dimension to understanding the natal and other charts. Demetra understands the ladies in myth, history, and in the psyche, and she details, amazingly well, their meaning in the chart.
5 stars except that I wish the other asteroids were included ... The four main goddesses are here and understanding them is enough of a project for awhile ... but I wish we'd gotten the entire sisterhood ... probably they are around here somewhere ...
The great thing Demetra has done is add the presence of feminine values and concerns to the horoscope. Supporting the Moon, the asteroid goddesses have as their interest, relationship, hearth, romance, adventure, protection, nurture. No natal chart should be without them.

The quality of book compromised by the amount of filler.

I REALLY liked this book EXCEPT for the fact that the information on the minor asteroids was disappointingly skimpy. The author provided an excellent amount of information about the major asteroids, and so it was surprising to see how little information was given on the minor asteroids. If the author did not have enough information yet about the minor asteroids, I would rather she had left out the "junk" and had a thinner (and less expensive) volume. By "junk", I'm referring to the pages and pages of celebrities' asteroid placements. The endless lists about celebrities added nothing to the reader's enlightenment on the subject, and I don't share our culture's fascination with celebrities. If the filler was the publisher's decision - perhaps to leave the opportunity for another book (sale), then I am very disappointed in that publisher. Publishers of astrology books usually give fair value for the price of their books. Had I seen the book (in a book store), I would have been conflicted about buying it. The topic is new and fascinating, but there is just too much filler. As it now stands, the book is really worth about $13 or $14 at most. If the author were to remove the filler and add the same quality of information about the minor asteroids as she has for the major asteroids, the book would be worth the current price.

an instant classic

Demetra George's contribution to the field of Astrology is monumental, to say the very least. This material came along at a time when women were actively seeking new roles in society and thus it is evidence of the divine inspiration reflected in the ancient Hermetic maxim: "As above, so below; As without, so within." This is absolutely a seminal work of gigantic implications.

This material forces the modern astrologer to grapple with complex socio-political questions. If Astrology is truly a symbolic language to describe and give meaning to our Lives, should not the stories we populate with this language reflect the populations we see in our everyday lives? The facts are that the 10 planet modern astrology which became the norm in the last century has a 4:1 bias toward male figures!

After the discovery of Uranus in the Age of Enlightenment -and the subsequent pronouncement that all MEN are created equal -we had the discovery of Ceres and the other Goddesses. Ever since then, we have been collectively struggling to re-integrate the splintered Feminine via women's rights and minority rights. It has been a long slow slog, however.

Believe it or not, it wasn't until the 1970's that anyone came up with the idea that men and women could actually have qualities of the opposite gender (and still be OK). In the mid-1970's Sandra Bem revolutionized psychology with a new personality theory. Instead of masculinity and femininity traits being seen in the traditional light as dichotomous endpoints of a single continuum, Bem proposed they be seen independently and that individuals may possess varying degrees of each trait regardless of biological sex.

Interestingly, it was in this same decade that modern astrologers began compiling ephemeredes of the asteroid Goddesses. By the 1980's Demetra George's seminal work Asteroid Goddesses made possible in astrology the movement toward balance which psychology was struggling to embrace. If you include these 4 exiled Olympian Goddesses in the Horoscope, then you now have a 15 planet astrology (10 planets plus Chiron and the Goddesses) with somewhat more equal numbers of guys and gals (9 to 6). In other words, you have a modern astrology which reflects the reality of modern life since at least the 70's. Women have begun to achieve significantly more power and visibility, but are still clearly biased against via such factors as the glass ceiling.

I can tell you as a professional astrologer that working with this material has absolutely been one of the most transformative and liberative processes I have experienced. I offer much thanksgiving to the Goddess for manifesting through Demetra and honor the many doors that she opened with this work.

Reliably Delicious!

As a working mother of a five-month-old daughter, I need tasty recipes that I can get on the table in a reasonable amount of time.

Melissa Clark has yet to let me down.

Confession: I'm a long-time fan of Clark's. My husband and I own two of her other cookbooks and frequently make her recipes from The New York Times' Cooking website. Some of those recipes (or similar versions) appear in this book, such as the anchovy chicken and the spicy pork noodles with ginger and bok choy. The anchovy chicken achieves maximum flavor from minimal effort and is a frequent weeknight dish, while the noodles are more of a tasty weekend project.

Most of the recipes, however, are new to me. The spicy Mexican Tortilla soup was the answer to my long search for an authentic-tasting version on a weeknight time frame, made easier by purchasing pre-made tortilla strips. (Passed muster with Mexican husband!)

The jalapeño-honey skirt steak was another winner that came together quickly and gave sweet heat to an old favorite.

Since we've only had this book for three days, I look forward to cooking my way through the rest of it, although her time frames for certain recipes are perhaps a little optimistic for all but very experienced chefs. Clark's introduction is fairly candid about the fact that time estimates are aspirational until you've cooked something a few times and suggests wine as a way to zen out and embrace the process. (Yes, please.)

As for ingredients? Some of them (sumac,
Pomegranate molasses) probably aren't in your pantry. However, Clark usually mentions substitutions, and an ingredient will frequently be used in more than one recipe. Push yourself! It's worth it!

After all, the title is "Changing the Game," not "Same old stuff."

Amazing recipes! I will be cooking my way through this book!

Dinner last night! Pizza Chicken and Roman Bread. Super delicious!!

But the real story here is the cookbook the chicken recipe came from, Dinner: Changing the Game by Melissa Clark. This is the fifth recipe I've made from it since I got it last week. Guys, everything has been stellar! And not very difficult or time consuming. But with these inventive, addictive twists that just bring them to the next level!

I've also made Sesame Chicken with Cashews and Dates, Child Rubbed Spatchcocked Chicken with Avocado Ranch Dressing, Scalloped Potato Skillet Gratin with Gruyere, Leeks and Black Pepper, and White Bean Dip with Charred Scallions. Last time I got so obsessed with a cookbook, it was Keepers.

My new favorite

I rarely buy a book without checking it out at the library but I broke my rule and bought this. It is a lovely book and as I flipped through it I found so many things I wanted to make. I've made a couple recipes so far and both were great and completely doable in a reasonable amount of time. The photos are great and the directions are thorough and easy to follow. I know this book will be in heavy rotation in my kitchen.

An insightful book which provides parents with helpful tips and advice on navigating the minefield of parenting in a digital world. The book helpfully begins by setting the context of how technology, with all of its advantages, adds to the challenges we face as parents, explains why pre-teens and teenagers are pre-wired to push boundaries and take risks, and then provides useful strategies for parents. It covers topics such as how much screen time is ok and how to analyse the different types of screen time when making that decision (eg playing a game vs being creative), and ideas for keeping the conversation going with our kids about online privacy and safety, and lots more. What I really like about this book is that it's non-proscriptive. The author offers helpful suggestions and explains why they might be useful and in which situations, giving lots of real world examples, without preaching at the reader. I would recommend this book to all parents who have kids using digital technology - which is pretty much all parents!

Good book for fans.

My son is 8. He needs help to read this book. This is because there's probably one or two words on each page that he can't read. Also, he doesn't get the jokes sometimes. I have to explain it to him. And I have to explain that sometimes the way something is said is the funny part. I honestly think it's a good book because it's teaching him advanced concepts of sarcasm.

You don't need a headset to see our Mixed-Reality future. Just get this book

If you’re only casually aware of what’s out there, your current image of a VR enthusiast may be of a twenty-something gamer with an oversized headset strapped to their face, tethered to a powerful computer, stumbling and flailing blindly around a room, bumping into walls and furniture as they fight dragons, zombies, and aliens that only they can see.

If that’s what you imagine, prepare for a revelation. Scoble and Israel’s new book, “The Fourth Transformation: How Augmented Reality & Artificial Intelligence Will Change Everything.” It will jangle your brain. It will whet your appetite for a feast of invention. And, in the process, it may also very well alarm you. If you are inclined to build, create, or invest in new kinds of experiences, it will open a whole universe of possibilities for you. If you are willing and able to work in that universe, you may even find yourself following Alan Kay’s quip about the best way to predict the future: you may find yourself inventing it.

This is their third book together and by far their best. Broadest in scope, deepest in specific research, and farthest seeing.

The future that Scoble and Israel are predicting (or, more properly, reporting) represents the most radical advance of digital technology since the development of the computer. It’s a future, they argue, that will transform not just our devices, but us and our world. Their sub-title promises it will change everything. Everything. I don’t think that’s hyperbole. The stories they tell are both breathtaking and mind-blowing. Scoble and Israel give us an insider’s glimpse into us what’s cooking in labs at startups (some them very well-funded and close to shipping), universities, and the top tier of established global corporations—in technology and entertainment. It’s an exhaustive, expansive survey, told with breathless enthusiasm (and ample warnings), covering a range of advances that are slated to arrive over the next decade. The core is a cluster of technologies already coming to market in their early primitive and/or over-priced versions: VR, AR, and MR. (respectively, Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality). If you’re not yet fluent in the terminology, The Fourth Transformation includes an extensive and helpful glossary.

Scoble and Israel take a high-level view. Their book focuses not so much on technical details, as on the likely positive (and some worrying negative) impacts these new technologies will have on our lives. Such diverse fields as health, retail, transportation, manufacturing, education, gaming, and entertainment will explode into new possibilities. The authors acknowledge that the infrastructure behind these technologies will create the means for tracking of our movements, interests, and activities. That will surely tempt surveillance by governments, law enforcement, and corporate marketers.

Some of the possibilities described in this book strike me as downright obnoxious. If pop-up ads and auto-play videos annoy you when browsing the Web, imagine a world where pop-up holograms and auto-play sales pitches greet you in every store, restaurant, and hotel. If I happen to stare too long at a box on the supermarket shelf or a jacket on a department store mannikin, I’m not sure I’m ready to have it launch into a “buy me” pitch. The promise is that the data in my digital dossier will combine with advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence to filter out everything except the pitches and messages I will be glad to get, I’m dubious. I’m not convinced the world needs more advertising.

Despite their unabashed enthusiasm for the new technology, Scoble and Israel’s longest chapter is entitled, “What Could Possibly Go Wrong.” Ironically, it happens to be Chapter 11.

The Fourth Transformation brings new meaning to 'seeing is believing'!

Oh No! Oh Dear! Disclosure #1 - this book the Fourth Transformation by Robert Scoble and Shell Israel, is going to cost me, dearly! I can explain. Really, it will be orders of magnitude greater than the cost of this timely volume - $17.70 on Amazon, despite having been accorded an advance copy (more on this soon).

The point is, this duo makes a convincing case that we are on the verge of a new media, a new capacity for story-telling, which as a nation and a world we have just learned once again is perhaps the most primal and powerful mover of human actions ever. Greater than facts, or evidence-based science, though in the discussion of health, teaching and augmented capacities, this transformation can well deeply augment and improve our abilities to factor detailed knowledge and information for better results. Or not. As with past collaborations, digital pioneer and gadfly Scoble, and his literate scribe Mr. Israel, delve into the potential abuses of these technologies and the media they enable, as well as the upside.

Disclosure #2, is I’m an admitted gadget guy. The world of Virtual Reality - products you will easily see promoted elsewhere - is not cheap. To explore, one must at least access a salon or demonstration facility. To own any of the devices will set you back several times more than the cost of that wall-size LCD TV you may have been coveting. Unlike the three earlier transformations to which the book refers - mainframes, text-based operating systems and then graphical interfaces on computers and smartphones - this next medium is immersive and may soon be ubiquitous. While VR currently requires a masking headset to interface with the world, the promise of Augmented Reality (AR) is adding images and information to in line of sight during our everyday lives. Israel and Scoble even seek to coin a new phrase to describe the ultimate outcome - Mixed Reality when we can experience a blend of digital and physical reality in daily life.

Disclosure #3 - I am a big fan of Scoble and Israel, and I fully appreciate their brisk and informed, contemporaneous journey through the state of play at the moment - in a year when Pokeman lept back into our lives via Pokeman Go in a small number of days, demonstrating how even a simple geo-located game can garner near instant fascination around the globe. As such, they are describing the advent of this nascent industry today. So I do caution not to expect this to be a definitive “history” of AR and VR, as one least impressed reviewer appears to have wanted. Instead it is a lively romp through the very early days that can be a portal for those wanting to understand where this new transformation may lead. (And Disclosure #4, yes I did receive an advance digital copy, but as usual With this two-some I wanted a hard copy so I bought it, here, of course!) It is a new beginning, and, as the authors quote Arthur C. Clarke in the frontispiece, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Enjoy the book. Yet beware of your budget if you, like me, get hooked. Remember, I warned you here first.

A must read for technologists of all stripes!

In 1960s, communication theorist Marshall Mcluhan wrote how communication technologies would become "extensions of man", a prediction becoming increasingly apparent in the early stages of what Robert Scoble and Shel Israel call the Fourth Transformation, outlined in their latest collaboration, The Fourth Transformation: How Augmented Reality & Artificial Intelligence Will Change Everything.

Just as Bill Gates, in the mid 90’s, laid out a vision for the future of the internet in “The Road Ahead”, Scoble and Israel dig even deeper to give us a glimpse of a future just as significant, if not more. A future beyond the connection. Even beyond context. As laid out in this book, a future of presence through immersive technologies of virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality. A future ripe with opportunities for both producers and consumers of immersive experiences along with the inherent challenges and concerns that lie ahead in this AI driven world we will all begin to live in.

What I loved most about the book is the deep dive into the talent driving the VR, AR and MR space, providing a glimpse behind the scenes of what is about to transpire across medical, educational, scientific, military, gaming and entertainment industries. But don’t be mislead, this book is not just full of facts and figures, it is a powerful narrative documenting the early days of a technology which will revolutionize the way, we as a species, communicate and observe the world around us. Which as the authors point out could be either a good thing or a bad thing (more than likely a mixture of both.)

A quote from Isaac Asimov opens Chapter 11 setting the tone to close the book. “The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.” The question artfully posed is will this Fourth Transformation finally bring us to a place where wisdom will begin to have a fighting chance? Where the potential of immersive technologies will inspire empathy from what will surround us regardless of our physical proximity. Where “in the moment” will become so much more than just a catchphrase.

The book ends with a healthy dose of intellectual honesty rarely found from the cheerleading section of the tech bench with the authors doing a service to the wild ride we're about to experience, eloquently exploring the seedier potential of the technology while remaining optimistic.

All in all, the Fourth Transformation is a wonderful read, adeptly exploring the transformation we are about to experience through immersive technologies and artificial intelligence. I for one believe the book will hold up well with the test of time to become a valuable resource for those looking to harness Immersive Technologies to engage in the marketplace of ideas and experiences.

I could not stop reading this book, it was a eye opening and truthful look at adults who lived thru child abuse. Any one who has lived thru this type of life would recognize themselves in Beth,Alex and Catherine.Excellent job Angela Matson. I thoroughly enjoy this author and will now read every book she has written!

I chose this book because I was abused as a child and I wanted to see how it was handled by this author. She showed. Good knowledge of the dynamics of child abuse and how it manifests itself. I wish she had shown how the mother got the way she was too.

About the Author

Colin J. Bennett is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Victoria, Canada. His research has focused on the comparative analysis of surveillance technologies and privacy protection policies at the domestic and international levels.

David Lyon is the Director of the Surveillance Project and Research Chair in Sociology at Queen’s University, Canada. He has been working on surveillance issues since the 1980s, and has particular research interests in national ID cards, aviation security and surveillance and in promoting the cross-disciplinary and international study of surveillance.
