Being a huge fan of the Panzerwreck Series of books, it is a no-brainer for me to immediately have a feeling of excitement when a new edition is released. Panzerwrecks 20 – Ostfront 3, as is all of the Panzerwrecks Series of books, been produced in the highest quality. The photographs are almost always cleanly reproduced giving a vivid and revealing look into the destruction of these vehicles. The information presented supporting the pictures in this book is informative shedding light onto how the panzers met their demise. It is not hard for me to recommend Panzerwrecks 20 – Ostfront 3 to any historians, modelers or simple anyone interested in this subject matter! Panzerwrecks continues to not disappoint us with their sustained series of books! (Modelers Social Club Forum)

About the Author
Lee Archer is a military vehicle historian living in Old Heathfield, Sussex with his wife and daughter. He previously designed master models for Accurate Armour of Scotland and was a regular contributor to model magazines. Lee has published twenty books on German fighting vehicles of World War 2.

Kamen Nevenkin is a military researcher and author from Sofia, Bulgaria. He has published many books about the fighting on the Eastern Front.

A bit of a departure from the usual...

... the book starts with 5 pages of information on Russian ground attack aircraft, armament, & tactics before continuing with the usual twisted German (& Hungarian) wreckage. The entire book, this time, is about the Balaton battles in early 1945. Pictures are from a Russian archive that are mostly unpublished.

Salgado, an economist by training, documents the unforgettable faces of workers at their jobs around the world. His widely published images of the oil-field firefighters in Kuwait may be the most familiar to U.S. readers. The catalog for a traveling exhibition, this book is divided into six chapters--Agriculture, Food, Mining, Industry, Oil, and Construction--that show the basest realities of work in some of its uncountable forms, from fishing in Spain, to textile factories in Kazakhstan, Eurotunnel construction in France, a slaughterhouse in South Dakota, and gold miners in Brazil. The reader almost never sees a smiling face or evidence of job satisfaction. Instead, this is an iconography of wage-labor toil, alienation, and survival. The location and subject of each related group of images are announced in the table of contents; otherwise, one needs to consult a separate softbound booklet in a pocket in the back, which offers Salgado's facts and statistics about the particular natural resource, geographical area, and type of work pictured. Perfect photographs, but not quite.

Salgado is divine. He produces the most perfect images out there, in the documentary realm, and this book projects that well.
The images are spectacular, no other word than that.
Excellent printing of an amazing darkroom work.

Still, one series stands out above all - the Brazilian gold mine workers.
This is the only series where you can feel strong emotions and the judgmental eye of the photographer (and this is what I'm actually looking for in documentary photography. But it might be only me, though).
I assume the reason for that is Salgado's origin, but nevertheless, I really wanted all the series in the book to be emotional as this one.

Workers: An Archaeology of the Industrial Age

At first glance this book is very intimidating by size. I was overwhelmed by the amount of photos Salgado took of his subjects, which in this book were the workers around the world. As I flipped through each page I began to think of rather than looking at a book of a photographer's work, it seemed as if I was looking at a photo album dedicated to hard laborers. Each photo is extremely vivid and beautifully shot. In addition, each photo gives the impression that Salgado puts thought and emotion before shooting his subjects. This is apparent by the many angles he shot his subjects and more importantly the extreme close-up shots he had. In many of his pictures Salgado appears to capture not just the action of the subject, but the emotion and story as well. You can't help but sympathize for each worker. Furthermore you start to realize how much the world depends on this type of labor in order to move forward. In a sense, this entire book give a view into all the hard work it takes to create all the luxuries we take granted for.
The entire book itself is very high quality. Each picture is printed clearly and at a large scale to show each detail of Salgado's work. It's also neatly organized rather than photos jumbled everywhere. Photos are separated by the location where they are shot. Moreover, aside from the large scale photos in this book which take an entire spread, there are some fold-out pages that contain smaller photos which give it that "photo album" feel.
This book is evidence of how great of a photographer Sebastiao Salgado is.

Excellent Introduction to Polkinghorne's Wisdom with Humility

John Polkinghorne is a unique individual; an accomplished particle physicist, he decided to change careers about 30 years ago to become a minister of the Anglican church. A Templeton prize winner, his writing style is lucid and accessible. Questions of Truth is a departure from classics such as Exploring Reality and The Faith of a Physicist in that it is a collaboration between Polkinghorne and his associate Nicholas Beale, who helps with the deluge of e-mail that Polkinghorne receives.

This book, while quite short, covers a great deal of ground and effectively signposts the reader to other books by Polkinghorne that deal with specific subjects in greater depth. (page 81) "Every so often in the history of the universe something intrinsically new emerges from within the deep potentiality with which creation has been endowed. This happened with the coming-to-be of life and again with the dawning of animal consciousness. I believe it also happened in the genus Homo with the emergence of human self-consciousness." (page 68) "At some point in hominid evolution, self-consciousness - a deep self-awareness and the power to project our thought far into the future - dawned on our ancestors. At the same time, I believe that a new form of God-consciousness also dawned for them. The fall was the process by which they turned away from God into the self, an error of which we are all the heirs." I am an avid fan of Polkinghorne; he understands the flaws in the quasi-scientific arguments often advanced against faith, but even when he is dealing with crass abuse of logic or science he always tempers his great wisdom with humility and congeniality.

Not Worth the Money

I purchased this book thinking that it would be helpful to me in my quest to identify Sarah Coventry jewelry. It has many lovely pictures, but hardly any names for the jewelry pieces shown. Since Sarah Coventry named so many of their items, I think it is necessary to have those names associated with the pieces. It does me no good to see a picture of what I already have and still cannot name it. The most helpful part of this book is in the back where the author has pictures of Sarah's catalog pages 1976, 1978, and 1980. Jewelry can be identified there if you have a magnifying glass. Also, I believe the author has unrealistic values on the jewelry shown. I see sets that she has valued at $45-$65 selling online for much less.

For any even quasi-serious collector, this book is worse than unhelpful; it is erroneous. Less than 10% of the pieces are identified...and some of them improperly. One of the most iconic designs, "Midnight Magic" is identified as "Midnight Madness", twice. The "Pearl Flight" pin is described as a 'shell design pin'. Most pieces are simply described, for example, as 'necklace and matching bracelet.' No dates are referenced. A tremendous disappointment. You can learn much more about Sarah Coventry jewelry on ebay and Google. One plus...it's a great workbook for writing in your own identifications and catching the author's errors ;-)
