Drawing upon a wide range of archival sources that have only recently become available, Scott McCon-nell examines the causes and consequences of the Vietnamese student migration to France after World War I.

When the student exodus from Vietnam began, a victorious France was more conscious and proud of its status as an imperial power than ever before. It commanded the loyalty of many of its subjects: during World War I, hundreds of thousands of soldiers from the colonies had served France in the trenches, and afterwards many came to study in French schools and universities. But some of the leading figures among them learned not to appreciate French values, but to have contempt for them, and they sought to turn the knowledge they had gained in France against French rule.

How did this occur? Why did so many Vietnamese who came to France during the Stalin era join the Communist movement? Why was the Communist party so much more successful than other parties in recruiting Vietnamese students? And why were the Vietnamese so much more receptive to the Communist message than students from other French colonies? McConnell believes the answers lie in the kinds of experiences that young Vietnamese had when they came to France. He shows that the French government's policies uere inconsistent and ineffectual, and French attitudes toward these young men changed from pride to hostility as they began to seem less the flowering of the French imperial idea than an ungrateful cadre of rebels.

Leftward Journey records the birth of "Third World" politics on the Parisian Left Bank, and shows how its first echoes fed into allegiance to communism. The book vividly portrays the superior energy and sense of direction of the French Communist party during the thirties, and shows how the Communists outdid their socialist and bourgeois rivals in winning Vietnamese recruits. As a contribution to Vietnamese history, this book will be of intense interest to professional scholars. Students and teachers of twentieth-century European colonialism will also find it useful. It provides important background to American intervention in Vietnam and to those who are interested in Third World Communist and nationalist movements.

Scott McConnell is associate editor of the National Interest. He has written for Fortune, the Wall Street Journal, Commentary, the New Republic, the New Criterion, and the New York Times. He was a journalist in Vietnam during the early 1970s, and has earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Columbia University. This is his first book.

I bought this book with high expectations, expecting to be given practical advice. After 4 attempts I managed to get through chapter one and found it to be dry, boring and too detailed about definitions, the same ones over and over. After finishing chapter one, I scanned the titles of the remaining chapters. There appeared to be no readily accessible help for a reader who is not embarking on a college program where theory and depth is important. I would NOT recomment this book for anyone who needs practical information.

The professional guide to make up artistry is absolutely perfect if you just starting out or want to refresh your skills.

It is practical, giving advise on colour theory,lighting,continuity,script breakdown,professional skin care etc. Yet it also remains creative giving excellent beauty make up examples and special effects.

It covers all make up from t.v through to film and theatre-although also covers more obscure topics such as body painting.

It is more theory based which i think is extremely useful and rare but therefore if your looking for a more photo based book this may not be suitable. It does contain useful pictures and diagrams where applicable though.

Overall extremely helpful and something as a relatively new make up artist I will always keep to hand and
recommended.

This is an awsome book if your studying make up or already a professional in the industry. It holds a wealth of information on everything form health and hygiene,colour theory, lighting theory, differences in cream/liqued/mouse foundations, period hair and make up and special effects. With so much more! It is highly text based, although does have very good diagrams and photos to demonstrate.It is not something I would recomend if your only wanting to learn make up theory just for yourself on yourself. I think their are far better books covering general make up for everyday living which would be easier to follow. As a proffesional make up artist this is something I will keep to reference if needed. I hope this helps you make a choice!

Nobody Writes Like Porter: Incredible

This book is perhaps the best written 500 pages bound in one place anywhere. Porter has a unique style of writing, that is hers alone. Her use of long, but salient and understandable sentences is terrific. Her use of simile and metaphor is almost unequaled. And her observational abilities and articulation of inner feelings makes her stand out as one of the best American writers of all time.
The book consists of 19 Short Stories/Long Stories/Short Novels and they are all extraordinary. In a shockingly well written story, she writes in "Pale Horse, Pale Rider" a description of going into a depressive pit, the likes of which I have never seen before, fact or fiction. Her style is so good, she leaves the reader guessing what is fact and what is fiction, in her fiction, with respect to her plot line in this very surreal story of a lady going into depression. Her characters are so intimately real life, as to make the reader feel they know them, almost personally. But what we readers know truly, is how wonderfully Porter expresses herself, and how incredible are her endings and beginnings, as well as wonderfully written middles.
No appreciator of American Literature should pass up the opportunity to read this book. In paperback, it is one of the true bargains in America today. For about 15 to 25 hours of extreme reading pleasure, this book fits the bill quite perfectly.

These stories move me and touch my soul.

"The Grave," a story about a woman whose past is as close to her as her present, is an incredible story. Like Faulkner's brilliance, she understands that men and women cannot escape their pasts, and the actions and events of youth play an indelible role in adulthood. Sometimes that past is forgotten, but small items, such as the shape of a particular hard candy, trigger emotional and poignant memories in the protagontist. This story blows me away every time I read it, and triggers fond and sad, emotional and trivial - memories - of my own childhood.

A buffet of words

Have you ever gone to an all-you-can-eat buffet and overdone it? Then left feeling stuffed but satisfied? This collection of the works of KAP is sort of like that-- you can really binge because there are so many stories, and they're all of high quality. You just want to fill your plate and "eat too much."
But you should really slow down, read some again and again. Maria Concepcion is a great tale of revenge and betrayal; "Virgin Violeta" a coming of age type story... "The Martyr" story about a famous painter (Diego Rivera type) who is in love..."Magic," "Rope," "He," "Theft"-- all of these are powerful looks into human relationships and are so well done that you really feel that you know the people that Porter describes.
Read it slowly, go back and savor the spices & intricate details of every story.

Structuralist view of 'the fantastic'

Those interested in the structuralist criticism of the 1960s-70s will find the most joy here, with Todorov applying the rigorous structuralist stance to one of literature's most fascinating genres. His demolition of Northrop Frye's approach to 'genre' in Chapter 1 is still cogent after thirty years (and an amusing read in its own right), but it's Todorov's chapters on the 'themes of the fantastic', and his conclusion on its role in literature generally, which are most compelling. This is not, however, an easy read. As Robert Scholes notes in his foreword, "neither structuralism itself nor poetics in general is noted for its ability to charm readers." You don't say. Fortunately, Todorov uses many examples from well known fantastic texts - such as 'The Arabian Nights' and the works of Edgar Alan Poe - and also from lesser known French works which will have you rushing out to the antiquarian bookstore to hunt them down. You can accept or reject the structuralist position - but if nothing else, this book will open up a whole new world of 'fantastic' novels for you to enjoy.

What Todorov Means!

This book is a great achievement in criticism, but one should be warned that Todorov is not talking about elves and dragons when he uses the term "Fantastic." In this book Todorov advances his definition of the fantastic as a "hesitation" or inability to decide whether events in a narrative are natural or supernatural. Thus, the book deals more with straight supernatural fiction, than with what we usually think of as "fantasy" fiction. All in all, Todorov is insightful and his book is a great companion to anyone who enjoys French, English, or American supernatural fiction.

It provides a didatic systematization of the fantastic, by dividing it into the marvelous and the uncanny. This system of definiton is of much help for researchers of literature, like myself, who sometimes get lost amidst so many prolix approaches. Definitelly a must-have to gothic literature aficionados interested in a deeper understanding of authors such Lovecraft and Poe.
