About the Author
Philip Wexler is a Technical Information Specialist within with the Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), where he has worked for twenty years. He is involved in testing, evaluating, enhancing, and documenting the TOXNET system and other NLM computerized files related to toxicology and hazardous chemicals, and is File Manager for the IRIS database. Mr. Wexler has taught and lectured widely on toxicology information in the U.S. and abroad, and has had numerous technical papers on the subject published. He has received the Distinguished Technical Communication Award by the Washington chapter of the Society for Technical Communication as well as the NLM Regents Award for Scholarship or Technical Achievement. Mr. Wexler also serves as an associate editor for a toxicology journal.

Excellent for teachers and children!

This children's church curriculum is great for our small church. With only two teachers we can handle the entire children's church because it incorporates using older kids as Park Patrol. We LOVE it...interesting stories, fun games, puppet skits, crafts and snacks to go along with each lesson. Whether you have 30 minutes or two hours, this kit can fill the time constructively. We are using it with kids from 2 to 14.

We have used both the blue and green editions at our church, and we loved them. The lessons & crafts go well together. Would recommend this to anyone needing a curriculum for their Children's Church.

We used the Blue Edition last year. We had 5 workers who divided the year. This was so easy to separate and give each teacher their material for the year. Lots to do, children loved the puppets which two of the teachers used. Good materials for advanced preparation.

About the Author

Julia E. Sweig is Senior Research Fellow at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. She is the award-winning author of several other books, including Inside the Cuban Revolution: Fidel Castro and the Urban Underground, for which she won the American Historical Association Herbert Feis Award for best book of the year by an independent scholar. She has been traveling to and writing about Cuba since 1984. She lives with her family outside of Washington, DC.

Absolutely everything you need to know. Loved the history, but as you get closer to the present day there seemed to be repetition. I am going to Cuba on a mission trip. The trip will be much more enjoyable having read this book.

Disjointed & Confusing

I love reading about time travel so I was anxious to dig into this novel when I received it. Sadly, it came nowhere near to reaching my expectations.

The story concept caught my interest at the start. Petra is a high school student that ends up traveling back in time when she visits a fortune teller. For me, everything immediately fell apart after this point. The start of it was that Petra was dressed up as a princess, including a tiara.. yet the "peasants" didn't so much as look at her! Her wardrobe would have set her up to be wealthy royalty with the lower classes bowing, being differential, etc. There was simply nothing realistic about the time period she went to. That is what makes time travel novels so delightful to read - the different customs, ways of thinking, learning history.

As for the characters, I felt no connection to any of them. In fact, I had to look at other reviews to remember their names. :(

Several times I found myself feeling confused and flipping back to see if I had missed a page (or chapter). It just felt like a lot was left unsaid. I'm not sure if this was meant to make it mysterious and make us curious or if the writer had it all in her own mind and kinda neglected to realize we, the readers, needed to be told things to "get it". After awhile I quit caring enough to flip back and would just skim past the confusing parts and hope it would make sense later. Now for the truly frustrating part: It never came together to make any sense! Instead we were given a cliffhanger and another book.

I wanted to love this book. I really, really did! Perhaps that is why I feel doubly disappointed. Needless to say, I won't be reading the next book. :(

Fascinating but frustrating

I found this story both fascinating and frustrating. I enjoyed the premise and liked the characters. They were intriguing, particularly Emory. However, the delivery of the story was inconsistent. It seemed to jolt with difficulty between being light-hearted and dealing with serious issues. Additionally, sometimes the storyline jolted between scenes. There were characters too, like Marshall, who seemed to show up only to force the plot to its next point with no clear story-related reason for it. Perhaps subsequent stories in this series will reveal that there is a reason for that, but I found it difficult to accept without at least an allusion to that possibility. Also, although I'm far from an expert, I'm not sure about the historical accuracy. For example, drinking tea is mentioned, even though most of the story is set in the early sixteen hundreds and tea didn't reach England until about 1650. Perhaps the author meant some different kind of leafy brew, but still ... There were some noticeable spelling mistakes too.

Could not get me engaged

I absolutely adore the idea of time traveling, period displacement, realm displacement, stumbling into a new world, or whatever you want to call it, I love it. We follow Petra Baron being magically thrown back 400 years into the past. She meets people that remind her of her modern day friends, forces her way into a plot about keeping the King James Bible from mass distribution, and reunites with her family.
Here's what kept it from a lower rating: edited well.
Here's what kept it from a higher rating: It wasn't written well. Characters lacked depth. In fact, the only character that seemed to have any emotion was Garret, and he was hardly a character. There was no emotion in the book. There was no magic either - how was she transported through time? I guess by an earthquake. Things were mentioned, like the Black Shuck - what was that? Apparently we had met it in the book but the author did not really make the reader aware of this. There's a romance between Petra and Emory. Well, at least the author tells you there is one, but it just sort of happens. He kissed her. that was the description. Petra didn't think anything of it. I didn't either. I was entirely apathetic throughout this book.
