Well written law book

Just finished a Master's in Education Administration and Educational Law was my last class. This was the textbook for it. I'd love to give it one star for being way too expensive - it is, but I can't fault the content. It made a fairly dry topic at least readable. I felt it delivered the knowledge appropriately to the audience - I'm a teacher not a lawyer - and in a way that left me feeling as though I had actually gained something from the class. It is still too expensive, but that isn't the fault of the book. If you buy it, I feel for your bank account, but I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

This book is clearly written and easy-to-understand. It features plenty of examples to more clearly illustrate the points it brings up. I actually am enjoying reading this for my college class!

A vital piece of rock & roll history

Turn just the first few pages of this book, and you'll know that you are holding more than a rock and roll book. This is a historical document. Photographer Joe Giron had full access to Pantera in some of the band members' most intimate moments. Side-by-side with never-before-told behind the scenes stories, "A Vulgar Display of Pantera" is an essential part of rock history. This is a sturdy, quality book, and Giron's work looks amazing on the full-color pages. If you know any Pantera fans, this is going to be #1 on their Christmas list. Guaranteed.

Great memories

Saying something is a must gets tossed around a lot. But in all honesty as a Pantera fan, it really is. This one is worth every penny. Some truly beautiful pictures. Now I thought I have seen a lot of Pantera pictures, even looking through Joe Giron's website, and a lot of photo shoots became familiar, but still so many I haven't seen before. Some really great candid ones (I attached one of my favorites from the book). I was surprised how many early days photos there were, even more than the last days. I really like the index of this book too, my only thing is I would have liked for the pictures there to have been in full color. The perfect coffee (beer) table book for us metalheads who used to go out to see them some 15 and more years ago. This will really bring you back to those days of being a fan.

Not the best book for the average homeowner

We are finishing a renovation and I am faced with the daunting task of selecting paint colors for an entire house. After re-reading Mariette Himes Gomez book on beautiful (neutral) rooms and reading her praise of Donald Koffman paints, I was excited to read a book by him. Disappointingly the book was not helpful for me. The book is outdated. Unless you like interiors from the 80s you're probably not going to find a room that you want to recreate. I could get past that if there was enough information to apply to today. I found the author assumed a deeper understanding of the color continuum than I possess. Rather than providing information about color and how it works, he presents case studies of his work. It's just too abstract for most. Here's what I took away from this $40 book: use colors from nature (already knew that and really not interested in lavender walls with terra cotta trim to mimic an african violet in a pot), Adjust hues based on the amount of light a room receives- the darker the room the darker the hue, the brighter the room, the lighter the paint. Use lighter hues to draw attention to something and darker to recede. That's it. That's what I got. There is a section on mixing your own paint, but really. This book didn't leave me with an understanding of the basics, how am I going to know what to do to make the adjustments? And what a mess! I think this book is best checked out at the library. That's what I wish I had done.

At last... colors that are ALIVE!

Are you tired of shuffling and comparing paint sample cards and agonizing over coordinating a palette, finally selecting what looks like the closest match only to find the colors you selected look positively DEAD on your walls?
This book will explain why. The concepts behind Kaufman's color palettes really open up a whole new world of color. If you never took an art class (or even if you did), you'll treasure this book because it explains very simply the basic problem with off-the-shelf paint colors and why, no matter what you choose, they have no life to them. There is even a chapter at the end of the book that shows how to mix and select your OWN palettes.
Anyone wanting a refreshing outlook on using color in home decorating will find this book essential reading.

the best book on color for interiors on the market

As an artist, I believe this book is, by far, the very best book on color for home/office interiors on the market. I have gotten so frustrated at paint stores as the language usually spoken there is very different than that of visual artists. Alas, Donald Kaufman has filled the gap! An intelligent, stunning book that reaches a place in my spirit that Martha Stewart couldn't reach........right up there with the recent book by Suzanne Butterfield, using Kaufman's color system.

The further adventures of Macro & Cato during the time of Emperor Claudius

This, the 8th novel in the series, begins with the destruction of a Roman cohort by the Parthians, sworn enemies of Rome and a threat to its eastern province Syria. Centurions Macro and Cato are sent by the scheming "real power behind the throne of Emperor Claudius" Narcissus to spy on one of Rome's more ambitious generals, Cassius Longinus, Governor of Syria.

The other reviewers here have written enough about this novel to give anyone curious about it an idea of its plot. I won't add to what has already been said. Suffice it to say, this is another good read about the adventures, battles, and friendship of Roman soldiers Macro and Cato. I admit that I gave this book in the series only 4 stars instead of 5 because I think it wasn't as exciting or as full of the riveting " will they be saved in the nick of time" desperation that was so well-written by Simon Scarrow in the other books...but that's just my opinion. If you are looking for a fast paced book to take along with you to the beach on a summer's day, you can't go wrong with this. I recommend it highly. Newcomers to the "Eagle" series should first read UNDER THE EAGLE...the book that started it all. Enjoy!

Macro and Cato at Their Best

Simon Scarrow is a teacher at a Sixth Form College. He has run a Roman History programme that takes parties of students to a number of sites and museums across Britain and I assume that while doing this he gleans lots of useful information for his books on the Roman Centurions Macro and Cato.

This is the eighth book in a series started seven years ago and Cato the young boy who left the confines of the Palace in Rome and entered the army as an Optio (second in command to a Centurion) has now matured into a man, moulded in the image of his friend and mentor Macro. Both men are battle hardened Centurions, though Macro has a dozen years on Cato. The have fought together in Britain and other parts of the Roman Empire.

Macro and Cato become embroiled in the fight to stabilise what is to all intents and purposes a neutral
Kingdom, Palmyra. As usual wherever the pair go trouble follows close behind and it is not long before the pair of them are engaged in trying to stop the forces of one of Rome's long standing enemies, Parthia, who having heard of Rome's presence in Palmyra decide it will be in their own best interest if they also send a force into the kingdom.

Macro and Cato are old friends to the readers of Simon Scarrow's books and their adventures are interesting and exciting, particularly for those interested in all things Roman and in particular the workings and make-up of the Roman Legions.

Desert Warfare against Parthians

Fresh after their involvement with the Jews in the previous book, Roman soldiers Macro and Cato were involved in a brand new military adventure, this time in the kingdom of Palmyra, a desert state between Roman occupied Syria and the Parthian empire. The Roman Emperor wanted Palmyra as a buffer between them and the Parthians. Thus when a civil war erupted in Palmyra with the king besieged in his oasis fortress, the Roman governor of Syria were obligated to send soldiers to help. An advance detachment of the Tenth Legion led by Macro, and auxiliaries Second Illyrian cohort led by Cato, who was acting Prefect, were despatched to help the besieged king while the main army were to follow later.

In true, Scallow style, the story is fast moving with enough details about Roman military life to be interesting. The heavily armoured legionnaires and the lighter armoured auxiliaries were involved with fast marches, being besieged in a fortress and desert warfare against the Parthians. It is interesting to note that the Roman's technique of phalanx was not so effective against the Parthians who rode horses and were expert archers. The slower moving Romans were like sitting ducks. Apparently this unequal warfare led to the historical military loss of armies of General Crassus and later of Mark Anthony when they fought against the Parthians, many years before the time of this novel. The Roman legions have not learnt from their defeat.

In terms of character development, Cato fell in love with the ambassador's daughter and was pledged to marry when they return to Rome. Another good book for easy reading on military warfare and fighting men.

Lawrence D. Rosenblum, an award-winning Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside, is the recipient of multiple National Science Foundation and National Institute of Health grants for his research on lipreading and multimodal integration and a grant from the National Federation of the Blind for his research on the audibility of hybrid cars. Rosenblum’s work has been featured in The Economist, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and on National Public Radio. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.

Great book on the senses and "sensory superpowers"

I've been studying and teaching about the senses for nearly 30 years while working at various universities, research institutions, and clinical settings. I'm constantly on the lookout for cool stuff to use in my classes and beyond. Well, "See what I'm saying" is just great. It is the best kind of science book created for a general audience: beautifully written, packed with fascinating material, and true to the scientific facts. Plus, it offers plenty of material that can serve to deepen and expand one's sensory experience.*

Take, for instance, the chapter on Taste. It begins with a trip to a completely dark restaurant, making some unusual points about the taste of food minus visual input. (Note to self: figure out a way to duplicate some of this with my students). The trip leads to a remarkable, extended discussion about things that most people never imagined. That is, the events that we perceive as occurring on the tongue (i.e., taste, flavor), are determined, to a large extent, by visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory events, as well as cognitive expectations and schemas (understandings). In other words, our strong sense that all the action is on the tongue and its taste buds is pure delusion! And while you can learn many of these facts in other texts on sensation and perception, you'll find that Rosenblum has animated the basic facts with colorful stories about exceptional tasters (e.g., a sensory specialist who consults with the food industry, and a sommelier with exquisite analytical wine skills). Moreover, the author has a knack for spicing the discussion with fascinating asides, such as a discussion of "deceitful foods," designed by the food industry to "promise" to the taste sense a level of nutrition that they do not offer. I'm not sure if I've conveyed the quality of this chapter, but it (as well as each of the other chapters) succeeds in entertaining while informing the reader.

The author describes the general intentions of the book in the preface: "(1) to reveal to you that you have extraordinary perceptual skills of which you are largely unaware; (2) to show that by becoming aware of these skills and how they work, you can actually enhance and use them; and (3) to convey that these skills illustrate some of the most important recent developments in perceptual science." The book remains true to these goals throughout. The author attributes much to a "new" approach known as "the ecological approach to perception" which focuses on how animals perceive and act in their natural environments. And while I'm not sure that this approach is anything resembling "new," I do think that the author's emphasis on previously unobserved perceptual skills is part of what makes this book such a goldmine of unusual ideas.

If I had a wish list for this book, it would be that (1) there were illustrations of key ideas, and (2) that the book went beyond merely the 5 traditional senses. I mention the first because the book is intended, for instance, to inform the reader about the brain. Wouldn't it be nice to see fMRI images along the way? I mention the second because the author's knack for writing and reporting would come in handy when discussing, for instance, the vestibular sense (balance).

The book is certainly interesting in its own right. At the same time, the book could easily complement a traditional text on sensation and perception in a typical undergrad course, bringing key topics to life. I might also add, that as a longtime practitioner of yoga and meditation, I see this book as being helpful in helping observers fine-tune their abilities to contemplate, notice, and focus upon sensory qualities.

*One of my pet peeves -- All too often, science books "dumb it down" for the masses and even distort science in the service of an unspoken agenda. And to make matters worse, a collection of aggressively ignorant readers will always view this as OK. For an example, see my less than enthusiastic review of "The Female Brain." This is a long way of saying that the current offering by Rosenblum is popular science writing done the right way!

Thought provoking

First, a disclaimer: I'm a friend of the author, and I almost certainly would not have read his book had I not been one. My scientific expertise ends with 11th grade chemistry, which I failed, and from which I have never looked back with regret. So, my reading of the book was in the nature of what in the movie business is called a courtesy read, without the benefit of having an underpaid assistant to order to read it for me.

That said -- and to my immense surprise and relief -- I enjoyed it. Quite a bit. And I'm not just saying that because doing so increases the odds that he will buy me a beer, though that is certainly an attractive prospect. The book is full of astounding examples of indviduals utilizing their senses in ways that seem surreal or almost, no pun intended, extra-sensory. If you've ever gone mountain biking or played baseball, it may well seem incredible to you, as it did to me, that there are people who can perform these same feats without the benefit of eyesight, by maximizing their aural sensibilities. I thought only Daredevil or Linda Lovelace could do that.

Similar real-life examples are provided for all five of the senses, and I learned much that I would never have imagined from the discussion of each. I even read the chapters on smell which, lacking that sense, I'd told myself I would skip if the book began to drag. But it never did. Some of the deeper discussions about the neuroscientific explanations for these phenomena were above my pay grade, but probably not yours, and even if they are, they're mere speed bumps on the road to the next instance of sensory ability that will knock your socks off and make you feel like you've been getting by while only scratching the surface of your sensory potential. Which is the point of the book.

One of the Most Uplifting and Engaging Books You'll Ever Read

For many of us, entertainment means escaping into fantasy avatar worlds, or other science fiction that seems to have little connection to our everyday lives. Here is a book that reminds us just how magical "ordinary" life is. Dr. Lawrence Rosenblum will have you mentally savoring fine Chardonnay on one page, while taking notes about improving your love life on another. His writing is so engaging that you will forget you are receiving a crash course from a leading expert on the science of sensation and perception. I was particularly struck by the warm and uplifting way the author handled disability issues, reminding us how adaptable and truly remarkable we humans can be.
Hope doesn't have to exist in dreams. It's right here, in our perception of beauty, our unconscious recognition of faces, our enjoyment of favorite foods, our implicit understanding of music, and so much more. If you're feeling down about anything in your life, picking up this book could be just what the doctor ordered.
