About the Author

Salima Ikram is professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo, and has worked in Egypt since 1986. She has directed the Animal Mummy Project, co-directed the Predynastic Gallery project, and has served as co-director and subsequently director of the North Kharga Oasis Survey. Ikram has worked on several excavations throughout Egypt as well as in Turkey, Sudan, and Greece, and she is currently very involved with the preservation and presentation of cultural heritage. She is the co-editor of Egyptian Bioarchaeology: Studies in Ancient Human, Animal, and Plant Remains (AUC Press, 2015).

Ikram is sensational. The diversity of information found in this book is wonderful. The book is an excellent source for animal cult studies and animal mummification with color photos and multiple illustrations.

Dr. Ikram is quite possibly one of the best nonfiction authors I have had the pleasure of reading. Her writings are easily accessible for a newbie to understand and learn, while still providing enjoyable reading for experts on the subject of ancient remains. I have read this book several times, and I often find that I will return to it over any other book in my Egyptology collection. Definitely worth a read, Dr. Ikram is a genuinely friendly and intelligent person with a great passion for the subject. There is no better anthology discussing animal mummies.

Fascinating and informative

An excellent book by a professor of Egyptology at the American University of Cairo. It deals with all the reasons why animals were mummified in ancient Egypt, why these mummies acccmpanied their masters into their tombs, and also the hoaxes that were sometimes perpetrated on unsuspecting pilgrims who thought that they were actually purchasing mummies of animals to offer to the gods. Salima Ikram is the leading authority on the subject of animal mummies. She has written widely on the subject, lectured on it at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum in London, and several other well-known institutes, and appears frequently on TV (I have seen her on the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, the National Geographic Channel, etc, etc.) She has established a room for animal mummies in the Egyptian museum in Cairo, the first of its kind in the world.

‘The IT industry is constantly pushing harder and faster to keep up with the “instant gratification” world we live in’

Astute coach and author Natalie Disque is a PMP certified full time IT Project Manager who has worked in the IT department for many clients such as Capital One, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Prudential Relocation, and Johnson & Johnson Canada. This is her fifth book dealing with the subject of Project Management. She has been creating and teaching online Project Management courses at the undergraduate and graduate level since 2001.

In her very straight forward yet supportive Introduction she states, ‘After doing research of my own and reading about how many failed IT projects there have been in just the past 10 years, it lead me to the following questions: Did the project fail due to a communication breakdown or was it a glitch in the software or an outage on the servers? Could the project failure been prevented? If so, by the stakeholders or the PM? Are IT projects failing due to PM’s not improving their skills by learning how to proactively take charge of a project, communicate effectively and lead a project to succeed? Does the PMI offer enough webinars and courses on the topic of leading successful projects versus learning from failed projects? Are PM's not taking enough initiative to research past failures and understand how they can avoid the mishaps from past failed projects?'

She elucidates the current preoccupation with smart phones – ‘Technology is an integral part of our lives. Whether we want to stay connected 24/ 7 or not, we are hooked on it with little hope of ever weaning away from it anytime soon. This is particularly true with the current younger generation growing up with technology as a normal thing in their everyday lives. I do not know many teenagers who are not constantly using their smartphones to update their status of some type of social media platform, let along do I know of any that watch television or listen to the radio to get their latest news as my generation did growing up. This generation is connected more than we probably want them to be, but it may be a good thing in regards to the experience they will have to continue innovative thinking and moving technological advances forward in the future.’

Learning from the past to ensure a secure future

We’re often told by ultra-successful, wealthy people that learning from failures in life can be just as valuable as what we learn from our successes. Recovering from your mistakes and jumping back into the action with a better plan can lead to attaining your vision and goals.

This premise is emphasized nicely in Natalie Disque’s concise and informative book, “Project Management: Failed IT Project Business Cases—A Career Guide to Lessons Learned.” Disque is a teacher and PMP-certified IT project manager who, in her own words, “has seen her fair share of project failures and has researched many IT projects online to provide better insight.”

The first half of the book highlights examples of failed IT projects within large, well-known companies such as Apple and Google. Such failures happen more often than people might think in the cutthroat IT world, and the upshot is that both small and large issues can cost these companies a lot of lost money. JP Morgan, for instance, screwed up because of improper numbers in an Excel file. Disque’s critique of McDonald’s shows that some companies should stick with what they know and not worry about being overly high-tech.

Other takeaways include the importance of proper testing and planning; making sure employees are properly trained; thoroughly strategizing and getting input from customers when necessary; and not creating unrealistic timelines that can doom a company. Disque’s correct mindset is that technology evolves quickly these days, and that companies need to stay on top of things to adjust and react accordingly.

The author spends the second half of the book covering areas—from the implementation of a project to the execution—that should always be addressed. This more technical, in-depth part of “Project Management” goes over requirements, planning, politics, and the business side of things. Disque then offers advice and summarizes things cogently in the “Conclusion” section.

“Project Management” would certainly be helpful for those in the IT field, but I think it also translates well to project managers and team members working in other fields. The book was enhanced with first-person asides and humor that give it a nice personal touch. In a congenial way—you can tell she is a seasoned teacher—Disque presents material that emphasizes a forward-thinking approach, collaboration, practicality, and sound strategies.

This book is highly useful not only to project managers in IT industry, but also in other fields as well. Reading this book helped me to understand the cases where IT projects have failed and further it goes on explaining the problems that caused this issue and the remedy for those issues as well. Natalie Disque's own experience as a Project Management Professional certified member and as a project manager helps the reader giving valuable information and aspects to look in to. As a construction engineer in the field of civil I find plenty of lessons I learnt from this book which can be useful and applicable to situations I face in the in the industry.

Technology—especially the desktop computer and the Internet—were unknown concepts when the first edition of this text was published in 1977. Today, technological advances have had a significant impact on the topics presented in the seventh edition of this text. Although no one can definitively determine the future direction of administrative office management, we can be sure of one thing: It will change. The office will experience more change in the next decade than it has from 1977 until now.

Managers and executives in companies of all sizes are focusing an ever-increasing concern on "the bottom line" because it is the most effective means of assuring their survival. The administrative office management field affects how well companies perform financially. As companies maximize the efficiency with which they carry out their office operations, they will perform better financially. All managers and executives can maximize the effectiveness of their areas of responsibility by improving administrative office management. STRUCTURE OF THE TEXT

As a field evolves, so must the materials used in the process of educating individuals about the field. Accordingly, several fundamental changes were made in the basic structure of the current edition. Several features are found in each chapter, including these opening features: chapter outline, chapter aim, and chapter terms. Marginal notations are found throughout each chapter. Features found at the end of each chapter include review questions, discussion questions, projects and activities, a minicase, and a case.

The chapter outline lists the primary and secondary headings found in the chapter. The chapter terms section gives the important terms found within the chapter. Each of these terms is shown in bold type at the point of first reference in the chapter. The chapter aim identifies the knowledge the student should possess after studying the chapter. The marginal notations ask a question about the material presented.

The review questions at the end of each chapter provide questions that can be used to determine how well the material has been mastered. Out of Date

The book would have been good about 10 years ago, but I've already found several major errors. For example, one certification that the book recommends, harps on, and tests on doesn't even exist anymore. Also, even though this edition was copyrighted in 2005, most of the online supplements put out by the publisher and emphasized in the book are not available anymore. In a nutshell, this book is woefully out of date.

Listen Up!

Listening can be the toughest part of the TOEFL to crack. This is because, unlike reading, you can't see it and you can't go back; all depends on taking good notes while recognizing the words and forms of academic discourse, as well as idiomatic expressions. Copy these exercises to your iPod and you can access them at any time and check your answers to see how you are improving. But with the Academic Lectures, each about 3 to 4 minutes long, it is essential to take notes so this isn't so much 'on-the-go' as the other exercises. I believe this is an excellent preparation for mastering the test.
