Be careful, the paperback version is a study guide

I had to quickly cancel the order. I saw the hardback at >$150 and the paperback at around $40, figured let's go for the paperback. What's not clear is that the "paperback version" is the study guide, not the book itself. Too misleading.

I do not feel this book is a good educational tool

I have recently taken Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. The subject was difficult, but able to be grasped with some study. (I am an adult student)As for the "International Economics" textbook, I feel it is very poor as an educational medium. If you ever really sit and attempt to read this thing, all you are reading are a bunch of letters. There is no sense to the material and very little attempt to clarify anything. It is confusing enough to learn a difficult subject without having to decipher every letter of the alphabet into a different word or variable. I understand brevity is necessary to avoid repetition, but please! This is to be a learning tool. There should at least be some attempt to 'spell out' the information once. I feel this book was a very bad investment on my part, and would never have been my chosen text for this topic. I wouldn't even give it one star, but that was as low as I was able to select.

Thick writing, outdated, but seems to hit the basics of international economics.

I have purchased and used numerous economics textbooks, and while this one covers the basic principles, it does so in a way that is difficult to understand. I felt like there was a lack of meaningful diagrams, tables, and illustrations at key points that would have reinforced key principles. Also, the text would frequently reference tables and diagrams on different pages, such that it was difficult to comprehend concepts while flipping between thick text and different pages for graphical guidance. Husted et al seem to take a very math-based approach to the subject, and spend a lot of time in the derivation process in explaining the background of formulas and principles.

It's also outdated. It constantly refers to "current events" in 1990s economics, and basically has no data beyond 2003, anecdotal or otherwise. With huge economic happenings over the past few years (specifically, 2008 and beyond), this edition could be safely mothballed in academia.

Lewis Is On Target Again

I enjoyed Bill Lewis' "Bowhunting" so much I decided to take a look at this one on spearfishing which I have had an on-again-off-again interest in for years. This is just as good and delivers the same level of detail regarding the best ways to start off spearfishing, improve and enjoy the sport. Great book for novices and the more experienced alike. Once again, highly recommended.

According to Wilkinson's account, some contemporary Catholic priest-exorcists have seen even more horrifying metamorphoses. If the priests interviewed in this informative book are to be believed, there is an increasing demand for their services. Underlying the attraction to exorcisms, Wilkinson speculates, is a desire for simple explanations for complex problems. "In a world awash in catastrophe and unspeakable suffering, many people feel increasingly compelled to see evil in concrete and personified—not to mention simplified—forms, and to find a way to banish the bad." Wilkinson adroitly places those who recommend exorcisms in tension with those who do not see value in the practice. The questions the skeptics raise are obvious but important: are people who desire an exorcism really possessed by Satan, or are they mentally ill? How does one distinguish a "legitimate" possession from other pathologies? This book is certainly not an apologia for exorcisms, but it will appeal to those looking for a fascinating history and some thoughtful commentary from proponents and skeptics alike. (Feb. 21)

Wilkinson opens with the powerful image of a seemingly normal, contemporary, 45-year-old woman undergoing an exorcism--a rite most probably associated with a hit novel and movie. Wilkinson portrays it thriving, especially in Italy, which hosts approximately 350 exorcists, a few of whom appear in her exceedingly readable book, as do several of their patients. Like psychotherapy, authentic exorcism isn't "a one-shot deal." Many attempts may be needed "to banish the devil," and while the exorcisms described will chime with Exorcist fans, the complete case studies make the book chilling. Wilkinson also discusses exorcism's history and how it is regarded with everything from ambivalence to embarrassment by the Roman Catholic Church today. Still, she points out, it is accepted, sanctioned, and performed "far more commonly than one would expect," and the International Association of Exorcists holds a secret convention in Italy every two years. Indeed, thousands of Italians reportedly seek exorcisms every year. Wilkinson goes so far as to call it a growth industry. Fascinating and full of surprises. June Sawyers

Trash from Hell! Go read "The Rite: the making of a modern exorcist" by Matt Baglio

"Don't judge a book by its cover" could apply to Tracy Wilkinson's book. With its fancy cover, what looks like a potentially good book to peer into the world of the Vatican's exorcists and the subject of exorcism turns into haughty mockery of the subject matter, its practitioners and the afflicted.

Tracy Wilkinson, the author, is presented as "the Rome bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times". Surely, she should know to present a topic as a an unbiased reporter? Unfortunately, it turns out that Tracy can't help but show her blatant biases throughout most of the book. Through literary perversity, she mocks both the exorcists and the afflicted sufferers, sounding almost like a God-hating demon herself. Tracy casually presents and dismisses the inflicted sufferers as mentally ill "patients".

How does an author think and write? Garbage in, garbage out.
If you want to know how any author or anyone for that matter thinks,
just take a look at the books she reads and the sources she consults.
Turn to the Bibliography at the back of this book and you only see
2 reliable sources of the subject matter: Gabriele Amorth and Malachi Martin, people who have dealt and confronted with the issue first hand in person. Besides the Bible, the rest of her other sources were not even from the Vatican or the Catholic Church! They were from critics, skeptics and cynics. Remind yourself: what is the title of the book again? If you're to comment on any workings of the Catholic Church, would it not make sense for you to read and consult official church sources? She may have briefly interviewed a handful of exorcists but doesn't adequately show the contexts they work in.

Skeptics and unbelievers will remain as that. As with every supernatural cases, unless one has a direct personal experience, it be from Good or Evil, chances are, you won't experience anything and will be left wondering what goes on. You may stand outside the circles and snigger all you want, but you're not going to learn anything unless you experience these events first-hand as a direct participant and observe things from a first person perspectives. No use rehashing aruguments used by third-party arm-chair cynics who dismiss supernatural events and Intelligences simply because they themselves are lucky not to experience these things first hand. Those who have a direct personal experience of God or His enemies will know that there are things in this world that no scientist can explain and no Rationalist or skeptic can deny. No amount of Catholic-bashing or God-hating will nullify the subject matter that there is organized Evil out there that can be personified and is intelligent. Denial doesn't vanquish Evil. Ignorance may be bliss to you, but it doesn't solve afflictions.

Perhaps, the priests the author interviewed should have better placed her in the exact same rooms where they did their exorcisms and have her follow through the daily lives of the afflicted! Don't stay outside the rooms, dear, how are you supposed to witness anything first-hand from the outside? Tracy, if you're reading this book review, if you don't believe in that Evil Intelligences exist, take long working and study trips with American psychic researchers and demonologists like John Zaffis, Ralph Sarchie, Lorraine Warren. I recommend everyone check out books, study and take cases from John Zaffis, Ralph Sarchie, Ed and Lorraine Warren, and other professionals who have dealt with the subject first-hand from personal experience.

Don't waste a penny on Tracy Wilkinson's thoroughly disappointing book!
It could have been better. Like all the deceptive magic scams out there, this book merely looks promising, but doesn't deliver on its catchy title on its cover.

If you seriously want a more objective insight into the subject from a rational and thinking journalist's point of view, please go and read "The Rite: the making of a modern exorcist" by Matt Baglio. You Shouldn't Write About Excorcism Without Faith

You'll never be able to present enough evidence to the non-believer...

It's a pretty good bet that the author has no faith and is writing about a subject that is faith-based. If this individual were around when Jesus was performing exorcism's, it's a pretty sure bet she would have scoffed.

During the majority of exorcism's I wouldn't expect to see evidence of the supernatural (IE, levitation, ghosts, the Devil, mind reading, etc.) Yet I have read about these occurrences on rare occasion.

She referred to Father Amorth, who may have performed more exorcisms than anybody in history, as an individual who sees the Devil around every corner. What should the author expect? If you talk about making money to Warren Buffet, he's going to see making money around every corner. Duh!

OK, now that I've gotten that out of my system, I still think the book is worth while to read. If for no other reason than the interviews with exorcists.

This author is very deceptive. She has some facts and lots of hearsay and opinion. She has much to learn on this subject. I pray for her...she has much responsibility for her work. Where are the days when people could read the pro and con based on facts???

Very good book

Bought this book because I'm a student tasked with designing and analyzing the aerodynamics of a FSAE student race car. As the book's title suggests, this book gives a good basis for aerodynamics design concepts used in cars. It also gives a little history of Formula 1 development which proved very useful especially when it came to design decisions regarding the under-body. If you are like me and have to answer to 10+ people, buy this book. Those 10+ people will all have their own design concepts that they will ask you to implement, and at least 50% of those concepts will be based off of what F1 cars look like. If you have this book, you can give them clear and concise reasons for not choosing their design strategy. My only regret about this book is that I didn't buy it sooner.

Competition Car Aerodynamics

I'm only about halfway through, so take this for what it's worth. This really is a great book for helping to understand the different devices used on racecars to create more downforce and also decrease drag. It's not very technical, but it's great to get a start into understanding how these devices work (i.e splitter/spoilers/diffusers/etc.). On top of the great explanations, it gives CFD pictures to help visualize what he is describing happening. You definitely won't regret buying this one.

Highly Recommended for Supernatural Fans

As a long-time fan of the show, I've read a number of the Supernatural novels by various authors and was largely disappointed. None seemed to add any critical - or even interesting - dimension to the series, and some were horrendous reads.

"The Mythology of Supernatural" is different. First off, it's non-fiction. Nathan Robert Brown is a bona-fide mythologist who combines his knowledge of the Supernatural series with a knowledge of Hebrew, Christian, Celtic and even Sumerian mythology, as well as folklore, to give fans a deeper understanding, hence deeper enjoyment, of the mythology involved in the shows. His writing is often scholarly, yet always presented in an enjoyable fashion. I look forward now to re-watching episodes with more information on the signs, symbols, and weapons used in the show.

Plus, if you read the book, you'll learn how to make your own holy water (you know, just in case...).

Highly Enjoyable

I bought this book thinking it would give me a deeper insight into the show Supernatural - and it did, just not in the way I anticipated. What the author does is take information used in the show then give you the background and history of it. As a lover of all things relating to traditional and angelic mythology and religious background I highly enjoyed the knowledge presented in this book. Though it's more a reference of background and history than it is Supernatural - the book is peppered with humorous quotes from the television show. Overall, I found this a highly enjoyable read.

I love it! Learned so much!

I got this expecting to read about the mythology in Supernatural. I was thinking it was a book about the myths and such that Sam and Dean researched. In this, I was a bit disappointed when I started it. But as I read it, I began to enjoy it so much. It's about the myths and legends of the real world that aspects of Supernatural were based on. Things such as the weapon Ruby's knife was based on, real demonic possession, myths/legends/stories of different religions, and my favorite, the legends/myths of Lilith. It's more research of our world as opposed to research in Sam and Dean's world. I learned SO much about our myths/legends/history.

Dr. Fun becomes the catalyst for dinner time competitions.

Like his other great brain teasing books, Dr. Fun continues to challenge your wits with his latest edition. Each page has new twists making you beg for the answer. Our 13 year old daughters rolled their eye at first glance of the book entering our home. Having left it on the counter for consumption, they casually picked it up and began to take on Dr. Fun. It was not long before we were all trying to race to come up with answers while making dinner together.

A clever feature in the paperback edition is the self revealing window pane answer key. Typical puzzle books have the answer key at the bottom of the page that are all too often seen by wondering eyes while searching for an answer. Dr. Fun solves this problem, cleverly, by the placing the answer key upside down on the next page. When you rotate the book and hold the page up to the light, the answer reveals itself through a dedicated window pane.

Dr. Fun never seems to disappoint.

Like potato chips, you can't stop at just one!

I have been a fan of Pat's entertaining puzzles since his earliest days as a regular in the Niagara Gazette. Pat's carefully crafted brain teasers, which meld simplicity and sophistication, are thoughtfully engaging and never discouraging. Sometimes the answers are hiding in plain sight and you'll find yourself chuckling that you missed such an easy solution.
I must warn you, however, there's no hiding what you are reading. You can easily spot a reader of The Cleverest Brain Games on the Planet. They're the ones holding the book upside down and peering through a page to see what's on the opposite side. Like his puzzles, Pat has devised a clever way to reveal the answers so not to inadvertently spoil the fun for you.

Pat's done it again!

I have been waiting for another book by Pat Battaglia. Hooray! My nightstand won't be lonely and I am now testing my brain again at bedtime. This book is as much fun as the others, reminding me that I am smarter than a fifth grader, sometimes. I am seventy-two years old and fret about getting Alzheimer's like my mom, so these brain games help to keep my mind active. This book can be challenging, a good thing, but I am enjoying the variety of questions and Pat's humor when he employs what seems like a simple problem. I can complete the answers to a full page, sometimes miss two or more, but then I go back because I can't allow the author to win too many times. I plan to purchase copies for friends.

Joel Salatin and his family own and operate Polyface Farm, arguably the nation's most famous farm since it was profiled in Michael Pollan's New York Times bestseller, The Omnivore's Dilemma and two subsequent documentaries, Food, Inc., and Fresh. An accomplished author and public speaker, Salatin has authored seven books. Recognition for his ecological and local-based farming advocacy includes an honorary doctorate, the Heinz Award, and many leadership awards.

Inspirational, entertaining, but misguided and poorly edited

I read this book the year my husband and I first started our organic vegetable farm (five years ago). It was a VERY inspirational book, and at the time I wanted EVERYONE I knew to read it. Salatin is highly entertaining and motivating -- the book is well organized into topical chapters with lots of lists and bullet points. It's a great read, and several chapters are RIGHT ON (such as the chapter on what to avoid and how to deal with moving to the country).

However, there are also some big scary flaws in the book that make it somewhat dangerous in the wrong hands. First of all, Salatin's list of BEST farming enterprises is very persuasive but doesn't account for differences between farms, regions, and markets. He ranks poultry operations as being highly profitable, but today chicken feed prices in the west (can't speak for elsewhere) are so high that all the small-scale poultry operators I know have gotten out of the business. Meanwhile, new farmers keep trying to do poultry because of Salatin's book, but I have yet to see it pencil out in reality for anyone.

Also, there's a big math error in that chapter as well. While he endorses vegetable growing as a viable enterprise option, he kills it with faint praise when he says this:

"In order to move $30,000 worth of stuff, you need a lot of pounds of stuff, and you need a lot of customers. If the average person spends $600 per year on fresh vegetables (which I'm sure is a high estimate), you would need 500 customers in order to gross $30,000. Because the price per pound and average purchase is higher for animal proteins, we here at Polyface can do that volume with fewer than 100 customers, on average. That's a hefty difference."

The problem with this analysis? $600 x 500 = $300,000!!!!!!! To make only $30,000, you would actually only need **50** customers paying $600 each. Big mistakes like this really bother me, especially when they're paired with such a strong argument in favor of one thing over another ... I just wonder how many uncritical readers have read this point and turned towards livestock production rather than fresh veggies (which is what we grow on our farm -- and we have found to be HIGHLY profitable). And, by the way, our average customers spends almost $1000/year on vegetables.

I also have a hard time swallowing Salatin's aggressive marketing techniques. He admits to GIVING AWAY free pullet eggs at market even though there were other farmers selling eggs that same day. He's even proud of this decision! Here in Oregon, the best resource we have are other farmers. We try our best to cooperate, even as we compete in the same markets (some call it "cooperatition"). Giving away product or undercutting others prices is not a good way to make friends with (or be fair to) other farmers.

Finally, I think that in Salatin's enthusiasm he verges on making farming sound TOO do-able. Let me tell you: farming is hard. You CAN farm, but new farmers need to have training, knowledge, good health, physical strength, money, land, time, and energy (and much more too). I have seen so many people start up farms with big dreams but not enough resources. Some of them have made it after fumbling a lot, but many others quit.

The advice in this vein that annoys me the most is when Salatin claims you can hypothetically farm without a tractor (and goes on to recommend buying a large BCS tiller, which is nowhere near as versatile as a tractor). Meanwhile, Salatin himself has a tractor. Every successful farmer I know has a tractor. Maybe on a very small scale you can make it without a tractor, but the reality is that to really succeed, YOU NEED A TRACTOR! They're useful for so many things besides tillage. And, getting a tractor is just not a big deal -- tractors are available used in all scales and price ranges, and they're not that hard to learn how to operate.

So, in conclusion, I'd still recommend this book to a wanna-be farmer, but with some big caveats: Salatin is a highly opinionated, fairly extreme (Libertarian Christian) man who offers his advice from his particular point of view. Take it ALL with a grain of salt and be prepared to tailor everything he suggests to your own farm, region, and market.

ETA 11/28/11: I've given this review a lot of thought and reflection since I first wrote it, and I've come back now to change it a bit. First of all, I've changed the review to three stars. Really, the book probably deserves more, but I want to make sure the points I make here stand out, because I feel like they really are important to note for possible future farmers (especially the bit about math and veggies).

But, upon reflection (and reading some of the comments), I definitely have been too harsh in my attempt to offer an alternative opinion here and point out the problems that I see. I've been reading more of Mr. Salatin's work and thinking more about our own farm experience, and honestly I can't think of an author I would recommend more to an aspiring farmer (along with Wendell Berry). The thing is, (in my opinion), when Mr. Salatin gets it right, he gets it really really really right. But there are moments when his strongly voiced opinions are seriously OFF from my real world experience. I think that in all his books (including this one), Mr. Salatin consistently underestimates the real world cost of animal feed and labor. Some of this might be related to the time of writing or the region or the fact that Polyface Farm uses apprentices rather than paid employees (a system that is very useful but unfortunately not legal - there have been crackdowns on intern programs here in Oregon lately).

Overall, I think that when Mr. Salatin speaks about specifics from his personal experience, he shines, and I seriously love the man. When he starts getting prescriptive about other farms (such as the top ten enterprises list), I start to get frustrated. This is true for me with any farm writer. Ultimately, every farm is so unique that it is up to the farmer to "figure it all out." Mr. Salatin acknowledges this in every book, including this one, so hopefully that is the take-home message for readers, and I'm glad to emphasize it again here: Ultimately, YOU have to figure it all out!

This is one of the best books I've read on any subject, not just farming. Salatin's sage advice on basic life skills (debt, sacrifice, discipline, being a good neighbor, etc) alone is the worth the price of the book. In addition, his model for sucessful farming is well thought out and clearly presented. Buy this book!

Philosophizing With a Pitchfork

If you are looking for a step by step guide to growing fruits and vegetables or raising cattle, move on. This book is not for you. Salatin doesn't spend a lot of time on carbon to nitrogen ratios. This isn't a technical manual on crop production. It is more of a folksy treatise on the philosophy of sustainable independence. If you have ever considered earning part of your income off of the land, then you should read this book. Salatin will at once inspire you and warn you about farm life. Once you understand what this book is not, you can begin to appreciate it for what it is. It is one man's manifesto for a better, simpler life lived closer to the land. It has been said that Friedrich Nietzsche "philosophised with a hammer." If one allows for the use of steel tools by a philosopher, then I submit that Joel Salatin philosophised with a pitchfork.

Margaret Thatcher’s premiership saw a sharp increase in British influence not only in the traditional British enclaves of the Persian Gulf sheikdoms, but surprisingly even in Saudi Arabia. The historic Al-Yamamah deal with Saudi Arabia in 1985, selling advanced fighter aircraft, was Britain’s largest ever arms deal. While British influence in the Gulf increased, the Americans floundered, culminating in the ignominy of the Iran/Contra scandal and the Reagan administration meekly accepting Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s apology for attacking the USS Stark and killing 34 American sailors in May 1987—payback for the Irani-American rapprochement. Tore T. Petersen sets out the policy objectives of Great Britain and the United States as they confronted the initial emergence of fundamentalist Islam, with the occupation of the Holy Mosque in Mecca and Khomenei’s revolution in Iran. Research by the author in the Nixon, Carter, and Reagan presidential libraries provides strong evidence for U.S. strategy based on Nixonian foreign policy objectives, supported all the way through to the Reagan administration.

Tore T. Petersen is a professor of international and American diplomatic history at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He is the author of The Middle East between the Great Powers: Anglo-American Conflict and Cooperation, 1952–1957; The Decline of the Anglo-American Middle East, 1961–1969; and Richard Nixon, Great Britain and the Anglo-American Alignment in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Peninsula: Making Allies out of Clients.
