Calvin, by F. Bruce Gordon

During the glory days of the French Renaissance, young John Calvin (1509-1564) experienced a profound conversion to the faith of the Reformation. For the rest of his days he lived out the implications of that transformation—as exile, inspired reformer, and ultimately the dominant figure of the Protestant Reformation. Calvin’s vision of the Christian religion has inspired many volumes of analysis, but this engaging biography examines a remarkable life. Bruce Gordon presents Calvin as a human being, a man at once brilliant, arrogant, charismatic, unforgiving, generous, and shrewd.

The book explores with particular insight Calvin’s self-conscious view of himself as prophet and apostle for his age and his struggle to tame a sense of his own superiority, perceived by others as arrogance. Gordon looks at Calvin’s character, his maturing vision of God and humanity, his personal tragedies and failures, his extensive relationships with others, and the context within which he wrote and taught. What emerges is a man who devoted himself to the Church, inspiring and transforming the lives of others, especially those who suffered persecution for their religious beliefs.

Review
"'This biography excels in providing a scrupulous, detailed narrative from the ground up... Gordon always, across 340 pages of detailed narrative, gives us the story in its full complexity.' (James Simpson, Times Literary Supplement) 'Those who want to engage with the facts should read Bruce Gordon's book Calvin, which is outstanding.' (David A. Robertson, Prospect) 'a considered book, balanced and fair, and very informative, written in an accessible manner... what is so salutary is the sanity of tone and the justice of the assessments... Disliked in his day as a foreigner, and disparaged now as a fanatic, poor Calvin deserves reassessment, and Bruce Gordon's biography achieves this well.' (Edward Norman, Literary Review) 'Masterful... this biography succeeds spectacularly by allowing a vivid insight into the life and world of Calvin, using generous quotations from his correspondence.' (Hilmar Pabel, The Tablet)"

The Best Biography of Calvin to Date
By Tim Challies
It is here at last. For years now I have been waiting for a great biography of Calvin--the kind of biography which I would recommend without hesitation for those who would want to learn about the life of the great Reformer. In a year that has seen the arrival of at least half a dozen biographies of Calvin, this one, I believe, stands as the best. Written by Bruce Gordon, professor of Reformation History at Yale University, it is titled simply and properly, Calvin.

Biographies of figures as controversial as John Calvin tend to be written by unabashed fans or ardent enemies. There is a lot of biography that reads like hagiography and a lot that reads like pure slander. This was the case with Calvin himself and his earliest biographers--either they were his closest confidants, singing his highest praises or they were men who feared and despised him, fabricating outrageous charges against him (such as Jerome Bolsec who, ten years after Calvin's death, wrote an account of the Reformer's life in which he accused him of sodomy and suggested that he had died from crab lice). Even today, many of the biographies seem to focus undue attention on Calvin's great accomplishments without wrestling with his notable faults and foibles. This new biography is an exception as Gordon writes from a position of notable objectivity. He seems a little bit detached from his subject, almost as if he has had to become a somewhat-grudging admirer of Calvin through immersing himself in the man's life. Throughout the book he is willing to credit Calvin for what he did so well but he is also willing to call a spade a spade, whether that means pointing out pride or temper or youthful arrogance.

The greatest strength of Calvin may be the author's deep knowledge of the time in which his subject lived. He sets Calvin firmly in his political, religious and cultural context, expending great effort in showing how Calvin was, in so many ways, a product of his time. This allows Gordon, a student of the Reformation even more than he is a Calvin scholar, to draw the reader into the time and the life of his subject in a way that none of the other biographies have been able to do. He also draws widely from Calvin's writing, introducing lesser-known works and drawing often on his voluminous correspondence. In this way it is a more well-rounded account of Calvin than others and one that is also deeper.

I tend to measure successful biographies in one of two ways: either they teach me a lot about the subject and the context of his life or they make me feel as if I've met the subject himself (with the very occasional sublime biography doing both). Gordon's Calvin falls firmly in the former camp. I did not feel like I knew Calvin himself at the end of this book, but I certainly did understand the man better, especially as I came to understand the religious and political climate he was born into and the even more complex climate he helped create.

In my opinion, this is the best biography of John Calvin to date. If you haven't ever read a life of Calvin, this will be the place to start. And even if you've read each of the other biographies available, I am convinced that by reading this one you will gain a richer understanding of the man and the complex times in which he lived. I highly recommend it.

Imparts a lot of knowledge of the man and time
By Ben W
This book is not an easy read. However, in the end, it is a rewarding read. This book is hard to start out, as there is little recorded about Calvin's early life, and the author is interested in really setting the stage in which Calvin grows up. A confusingly large number of names becomes easier to manage as you progress through the book and see certain people come to the front of Calvin's life and the time period. The book is not entirely in an entirely chronological format; instead, in a generally chronologically manner, with a good bit of overlap, the author tackles major events in Calvin's life, many of which took place over many years. This is a great book for learning about both Calvin, and about the Reformation during his lifetime. One of the more interesting things that really came through a lot was the struggle & cooperation between church & state at a time when the two governments were largely held to be in many ways one. It provided some food for thought: considering what the good points of a system like that are, and what are the bad points. In the end, it does seem that the bad out-weighs the good, as even I, as a Reformed (Calvinist) Baptist, would be considered a heretic by Calvin because I'm not a pado-baptist.

Reformed Bishop
By Thomas J. Burns
A biography of John Calvin is of necessity a history of his time. The religious landscape of Europe during Calvin's lifetime [1509-1564] was most complex in terms of grassroots pastoral piety, theological exploration, and international relations. And then there is Calvin: his own religious journey, from French Catholic reformer to Protestant patriarch. There is the corpus of Calvin's theological thought and writing, enduring and controversial to this day. And finally, there is the matter of Calvin's ecclesiology: what structural and communal body of belief and practice did he leave his followers. Bruce Gordon has produced an eminently readable and highly manageable general study of these questions in producing a remarkable introduction to John Calvin for the informed reader with at least a basic grasp of Reformation dynamics.

As Robert Bireley has narrated in his fine work, "The Refashioning of Catholicism 1450-1700," [1999] the spirit of church reform was not the exclusive provenance of Luther. Grassroots outcroppings of lay spirituality emerged side-by-side with wholesale reform of many existing Catholic religious orders to improve the tenor of church life by 1500. It is not surprising, then, that the young Catholic Calvin would by his early adulthood identify himself as an apostle of reform. but as Gordon observes, reformist Catholics in France had nowhere to lay their heads in the face the crown's opposition to Luther and seminal Protestant uprisings of independence on the continent.

Calvin began his studies in theology but turned instead to law. A true humanist of the time, he immersed himself in the Roman philosopher Seneca. At some point in 1533 the Protestant conviction that the papacy was beyond repair was embraced by Calvin, though at this early time such French converts did not as yet have ecclesiastical bodies to align with. Like many of his mindset, Calvin remained a vocal and prolific voice of change within Catholicism until his writings and other agitations made his life in Catholic France intolerable. In 1534 he moved to a more affable setting in Switzerland.

Switzerland's Protestant reform was rich in zeal but poor in unity. Each of its major cities hosted major proponents of Protestant reformed theology. The major overarching conflict upon Calvin's arrival was the significant tension between Martin Luther and Huldrych Zwingli, with the latter advocating a much more radical abandoning of traditional church life than Luther. Gordon pays close attention to the various points of contestation elaborated by such theological masters as Bucer, Oecolampadius, Melancthon, Erasmus, and others, and he rightly distinguishes Calvin as a theologian with a long view of the future, and the realization that if Protestant reform was to survive, it must be united.

As Gordon chronicles Calvin's life, it becomes clear that Calvin cannot pull together the Christian church. But it is not for lack of trying. As is often the case with great thinkers of all disciplines, Calvin's most lasting contribution to Christianity was written in his relative youth, his "Institutes of Christian Religion." In this work, revised several times during his lifetime, Calvin outlines what might be called reformist ecclesiology for the first time. He weaves together doctrinal foundations, church structure, and personal piety. It is in this work that we come across his controversial definition of "predestination." Gordon's handling of the question is eminently clear and lucid. Calvin believed in what one might term "a double call." The Institutes sites Old Testament metaphor, noting that while Esau and Jacob are both of the chosen people, Jacob had been chosen before birth for special election. On its face Calvin's theory did not convince me, but it may have made more sense at the time of his writing when all warring Christian parties could claim the blessing of baptism but not all, at least in Calvin's eyes, were worthy of eternal election.

Calvin, of course, is historically identified with the city of Geneva. As a young man with zeal and perhaps restless disregard, he took the pulpit as a layman in the company of close and equally outspoken fellow warriors. Theological and personal conflicts led to his discharge from ministerial duties, but he would be invited back by the city magistrates a few years later. Gordon notes that upon his return Calvin was charged with creating a church order that would satisfy divergent expectations in Geneva. Calvin never "mellowed" strictly speaking, but age brought him a greater sense of his personal charism in the pulpit and his organizational role as leader.

Thus, Calvin's ministerial persona was centered on preaching. While he defended a modified sacramental system, it is very clear that the preaching of the Bible and its moral implications for personal and civil life was the fulcrum of ecclesiology and ministerial identity. Gordon describes Calvin as a highly respected preacher, whose sermons did not hesitate to address matters of public conduct and controversy. One gets the impression that he was greatly revered if not greatly loved in Geneva.
It is equally clear from the text that Calvin, whatever he might say about Catholic orders, functioned as a bishop. He fully embraced a magisterial role for the reformed church throughout Europe. This is evident in his recruitment and support of reform missionaries for work in Catholic France, for example, where many of his missionaries came to ultimate cruel martyrdom. Calvin was criticized for not joining them in France, but he defended himself on the grounds that his life was too important for the life of the church as a whole. ["Strike the shepherd, and the sheep scatter."] Clearly, Calvin was neither a Congregationalist nor a mystic. Gordon repeatedly underscores Calvin's identification with St. Paul--theologian and definitely churchman.

Gordon is not sentimental about Calvin, but the thought occurs that the reformed church's first true shepherd resembles in many aspects the Catholic Ignatius of Loyola. By his straightforward rendering of the story, Gordon has made the case for the tragedy and cost of disunion.

Nonlinear Mesoscopic Elasticity: The Complex Behaviour of Rocks, Soil, Concrete, by Robert A. Guyer, Paul A. Johnson

This handbook brings together a great deal of new data on the static and dynamic elastic properties of granular and other composite material. The authors are at the very center of today's research and present new and imported theoretical tools that have enabled our current understanding of the complex behavior of rocks.
There are three central themes running throughout the presentation:
? Rocks as the prototypical material for defining a class of materials
? The PM space model as a useful theoretical construct for developing a phenomenology
? A sequence of refined analysis methods.
This suite of new methods for both recording and analyzing data is more than a single framework for interpretation, it is also a toolbox for the experimenter. A comprehensive and systematic book of utmost interest to anybody involved in non-destructive testing, civil engineering, and geophysics.

Be careful!
By mehdi
I give the book three stars not because the book is average but because it can be 5 stars or 1 star!Although it may seem strange, but it is the truth about this book.It can be 5 stars or more, since the authors are in the heart of research and they are pretty good in this field (probably #1 in the world). It can be 1 star since this is not a book to start with.In other words, the book is brief and it expect you to know a lot of stuff beforehand. If you buy this book with a preliminary knowledge of just continuum mechanics or theory of elasticity you may find it very very complex. If I want to compare it with a well written and explained book like continuum mechanics for engineers written by Mase, that book is like learning alphabet of English, while the complexity of this book is like understanding of a medium sized paragraph. That's probably because the Authors of the book are physicits rather than engineers. The language of physicits is somehow different from engineering language. It may take you a while to connect with this book and may make you crazy, but I think it is worthy to struggle!

Five stars isn't nearly good enough for something that will help your child love history!
By Sonya Haskins
Rather than presenting students with a book where they learn little snippets of information about one short time in history, History Revealed uses a comprehensive curriculum approach.

In Ancient Civilizations and the Bible, students study history from the creation of the world (approximately 4004 BC) to the time of Jesus Christ. The great part is that Diana Waring presents the stories of history while taking into consideration everything going on in the world before, during and after this time period. We've learned so much about history since we started using this curriculum - and we've enjoyed the whole process!

The student manual integrates art, music, architecture, math, and numerous other subjects (making it a comprehensive curriculum) as they relate to the topic being discussed. The workbook also has areas for vocabulary, student self-evaluation, short answer questions, maps, etc. There is literally something for everyone (reading, written work, audio CDs, hands-on projects, etc.), which is a neat way to encourage students with different learning styles and preferences.

We actually purchased the audio CDs for this set (and for Romans, Reformers, and Revolutionaries) before we went on vacation were looking for some interesting audio CDs to listen to. Since we homeschool, we thought we'd try history CDs and we came upon the True Tales, Digging Deeper, and What in the World CDs. It was only later that we found out that the audio CDs went with the History Revealed curriculum series. The whole family enjoys them! I would recommend the CDs for any parents - even those who don't homeschool, but who just want to enjoy some great audio materials.

While the curriculum is geared toward students in grades 6-12, the elementary activity book is meant for students in grades K-4. Younger students can learn right alongside their older siblings. The wonderful thing is that the curriculum also includes a comprehensive curriculum approach, which incorporates science, math, mazes, hands on activities, etc. all while the student studies history IN PERSPECTIVE. This multi-sensory approach not only helps retain a student's interest, but it also ensures that there is something for everyone when it comes to learning styles.

I can't recommend this curriculum highly enough. When parents place this curriculum in students' hands, they will be begging to do schoolwork! History will never be the same after you use the History Revealed curriculum, whether it's set one (Ancient Civilizations and the Bible) or set two (Romans, Reformers, and Revolutionaries). You and your children will be so excited about history that you won't be able to get enough!

Ancient Civilization and the Bible
By J in VA
We are using this curriculum in our homeschool this year. I like the format and the variety of learning activities.

But, I do not like the Teacher's Guide. I expect a Teacher's Guide to have ALL the answers for the questions posed to the student, the vocabulary defined and samples for time lines. Often, I find I have to spend time searching through the text and often other texts to find the answer for a question that I don't readily know.

My other critique involves the cooking activites. Often the recipes are not presented in the simplest method or involve seasonal/diificult to find ingredients. For example, if you start this book in the fall, you will be studying Persia in the winter. The recipe for Persia was a cold cucumber soup. Yummy I'm sure, but fresh cucumbers are not available in January. We ended up making Hummus. The Ezekial bread required 1/4 cup amounts of several unusual flours with no suggestion on where to find them in bulk or suggestion on where one might find pre-mixed ingredients. It would have cost far more that the two loaves of bread would be worth to have made the bread and barely used any of the flours if I had purchased them in the form available to me in my local store. Perhaps more than one choice could be offered or suggestions for where to find an alternative if season or food preferences/allergies neccessitate something else.

I love the concept of combining the Bible and history but a bit of fine tuning would make this a 5+.

Almost perfect...
By S. Landon
I got this to use in homeschooling a high school-aged boy. It is packed with information as well as ideas for projects, bible passages to read, books to read, crafts to make, food to make according to the topic. The only thing that would make it perfect is if it also included some kind of assessments in each lesson.

From Publishers Weekly
In this study of the evolution of domestic living, McGill University architecture professor Rybczynski traces the material and cultural influences that have helped shape our notions of comfort. PW recommended this "intriguing" book.
Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
In a loosely configured essay, Rybczynski (Architecture, McGill Univ.) discusses the idea of comfort and the Western cultural attitudes that have shaped it since the end of the middle ages. Rather than dealing with the technical aspects of architecture, he reviews such cultural variables as intimacy and privacy, domesticity, ease, and ideas about light, air, and efficiency as they have changed over time. Essentially Rybczynski makes a plea for the primacy of cultural ideals as a basis for creating psychologically comfortable homes. Though he is selective in his history and examples, this is a worthwhile counterweight to the all-too-common technical practices of modern architects. Recommended. The underlying concepts of domesticity
By A Customer
I love this book. I love the topic, analyzing the humble dwellingplace for its universals. I love the way he has organized by those very topics rather than by the detail of historic era or functional object. "Home" liberates the whole topic to a level whidh allows the reader to consider what all people have in common for their needs and ambitions, and it inspires such optimism for it demonstrates how resourceful people naturally are. The reader feels so much more aware of mindless routines and can delight in the choices of continuing what is habit or deliberately designing a new tradition. For this reason I like using the book with middle school and high school students. It is too long for the time allowed in the school calendar, but it suits a jigsaw approach of different groups of students studying one of the conceptual chapters and applying the insights to their own lives. The reading level is challenging but appropriate if students are not expected to read too much of it in too short a time. This is one of those treasured volumes that suits the purest progressive tradition of education: it is based on authentic experience which helps students find meaning in their real lives here and now, all the while stretching their capacity to see logic in the world. A nice companion to it is "House" by Tracey Kidder for its similarly direct and quiet manner of discussing the decisions people make, alone and collaboratively, to improve their living situation. Like "Cod", this book should be the way students learn history: focused on a recognizable topic and connecting years and years of interaction between people as it describes the everyday personal consequences of innovation and competition. 'Home: a short history of an idea" needs more than five stars, and it needs to be widely available to schoolchildren, perhaps by individual chapter.

Exploration
By Amazon Customer
This book is an exploration into the meaning of the word "comfort" and its place in the home. Rybczynski begins the volume with an examination of the Sixteenth Century painting by Durer "Saint Jerome in His Study". He describes each of the objects and furnishings visible in the paining in turn, noting that they are not particularly conducive to comfort or reflective of individuality. Rybczynski goes on to describe how this painting may be representative of the era in which it was painted, how houses at the time had many occupants and were spaces where people lived communally, but not necessarily as a family in the present sense of the term. He argues that in the Sixteenth Century, the nuclear family as a residential unit was non-existent, since children were sent away to live and work with others at a young age, and households always included many unrelated servants or apprentices. It was only later, as the concept of the nuclear family became more established that the need for privacy came to the fore, and private and public spaces began to be differentiated within the house. Later developments in technology, especially plumbing, ventilation, and lighting also came to influence housing design. One of the themes of the book is how the field of interior design has often been faced with the conflict between what looks good and what feels good. Rybcynski stresses that often the style of a design wins out, leaving the residents with the very least in comfort (to the point of having to carry their toothbrushes to and from the bathroom for lack of proper storage there, for instance).
Some of Rybcynski's discussion is quite interesting, particularly that concerning the influences French, Dutch, and British cultures have had on the development of houses and homes over the centuries, especially in North America. It would have been interesting to consider some of the influences of other world cultures on housing styles as well. For example, certainly Spanish and Arabic cultures have had a strong impact on house design and interiors of North American homes. However, considering such topics for the sake of completeness might have taken the book too far afield. In order to explore the concept of comfort with respect to design, Rybcynski has selected only a few examples of cultures and designers to explicate his points.
The book is academic in style, although quite accessible and engaging for the general reader. Sources are listed in the extensive endnotes, and there is an index.

For anyone buying or building a home.
By A Customer
I first read this book 14 years ago and it changed my life. This book is a must for anyone buying or building a home. You will never look at a house in the same way again, and you will appreciate good and functional design as never before . Your understanding and excitment at the things that make a house a pleasant home will be enhanced more by this book that any academic or popular text on the subject that I have seen or read. The author weaves together the historcal and social aspects, as well as design, in an intriguing tale. This is truly absorbing reading, you will not want to put it down. It is plainly and simply, very well writen. Rybczyski speaks as one of us.

Perfect Summer Read
By The Shoe Brain
Loved it. Great add-on to Jennifer Weiner's Good in Bed (among others) and Browne's previous Little Lady series.

Well-written, good plot, standard romantic comedy. I give it 4 stars overall as a novel. Perfect for escapism, does lack innovative storyline post-Little Lady Agency (granted, difficult to do). However, if this becomes her signature, I'm supportive, definitely not against it.

Overall, I highly recommend (I canceled plans just so I could continue reading); can't wait for what Hester has lined up next, hopefully soon!

It's all very nice, but there's not much going on...
By cmp
I really wanted to love this book. I love Brit chick lit - set a story in London and you've got my interest immediately. And there is nothing horrible about this book, but there's just not very much going on at all.

Betsy is sweet. Bone-deep sweet. It's easy to like her, but there's just not much more there. She's not terribly funny, she's not tragic, she's not even really struggling financially or anything interesting. There are hints that her personality changed some at 18, but it sounds like she went from being much more fun to pretty boring, and since the book is set in the "now", well...

In fact, NONE of the characters have an edge of any sort. The best friend is a little flaky, but not ridiculous. The 18 year old girls at the finishing school might act edgy, but are really sweet underneath. There is no villain - or, if there are supposed to be, in the current headmistress or a former pupil/femme fatale - they are so mild as to not cause any real worries.

Betsy's search for her birth parents is lukewarm at best. I think she's right about her "new classes" (I'm trying not to give anything away that's not in the blurb on amazon.com here) but even that doesn't lead to a ton of conflict.

There's a bit of a romance, but it's nothing torrid, depressing, or funny.

The dialogue is well-written, the settings are well-drawn, the characters are easy to picture, the writer's grasp of grammar and good writing style are there - which is worth the 3 stars to me - but there's just not enough plot or emotion going on. I don't normally love what I'd call "book club books" full of depression, or at the least self-conflict, but I would have still preferred that to this. I don't know even how I'd describe this book. It's not exactly a romance, it's not very comedic, it's not deep... I don't know what it is. I found myself putting this book down after every chapter, frankly because I was just getting bored with it.

As I said, it's perfectly pleasant, but it's nothing but a beach read. Even for that, it's lacking drama or any other full-scale emotion to draw you in. It's just missing that "wow" factor for a great book.
