Along the Malabar Coast of Southern India there are communities of Syrian Christians, originally founded in the first century by St. Thomas who converted several Brahmin families to Christianity. It was these early Christians who then intermarried with Syrians settling there. The result was the creation of the vibrant Syrian Christian community of Kerala and its rich culinary heritage that is so superbly showcased in Lathika George's elegant ethnic cookbook "The Kerala Kitchen: Recipes And Recollections From The Syrian Christians Of South India". Interlaced with the recipes for exotic dishes are anecdotal stories associated with them and the community from which they spring. The recipes range from Rice Flatbread; Yams with Ground Coconut; Fish Roasted in Banana Leaves; and Kerala Chicken Roast; to Spiced Cooked Buttermilk; Sweet Plantain Chips; Smoked Gooseberry Preserve; and Mango Mousse. disappointed

After attending a wedding in interiors of Kerala i fell in love with traditional syrian christian fare. Finally I got this book as a valentine's day gift . Like many food blogs today ,this is certainly a good read. It gives a very beautiful glimpse of the kerala.

But when it came down to practical cooking i was a little disappointed .I did read in a food blog that the measurements of the spices in some recipes in this book are not so correct , and found that to be true after trying a couple of recipes.

If it is meant for someone who is not familiar with the cuisine ,the absence of pictures/color photographs of the dishes can make it very difficult to imagine what the end product must look like. The easy way to find the pics is to google the original name of the dish(not the elaborate translation of the original names) .The pictures can be found on the numerous food blogs , but so can the recipes!!
The author has also made some basic mistakes in the names of the dishes like writing kappalandi (peanut) where she has meant kashuvandi(cashewnut).Agreed that the author is brought up outside Kerala, but the research of the right names of the food item should at least be done when writing a cookbook.You will not get the right image if you search for kappalandi chertha kozhi(chicken with peanuts) instead of kashuvandi (cashewnut).
The traditional names are written in a much tinier size under their english description.Its like searching for "pizza" in an italian cookbook and finally finding it written inconspicously under something like "oven-baked, flat, round bread typically topped with a tomato sauce, cheese and various toppings." I dont know if it is just me -But i find it very annoying to search for "pineapple with yogurt and mustard sauce"; instead of "pineapple pachadi"; or "Flaky kerala flatbread&" instead of "parotta".
Altogether a good read but not a very good cookbook.

A pleasure for the mind and stomach!

The Kerala Kitchen: Recipes and Recollections from the Syrian Christians of South India (Hippocrene Cookbook Library)

Any self proclaimed Indian cooking expert should and MUST have this cookbook on his/her shelf. Chock full of traditional mouth watering recipes, this slim volume of delectable Kerala SYRIAN CHRISTIAN (and there is a difference!) dishes will leave you salivating and ravenous.
As a second generation displaced Keralite growing up in Africa and Europe, I never appreciated such meals as Fish Roasted in Banana Leaves (see page 80) or Toddy Pancakes (see page 43). My siblings and I preferred canned sausages and mashed potatoes over Yesterday's Fish Curry (Page 86) or Fried Bitter Gourd (page 150). Indifferent to our finicky palates, my parents insisted (force fed, I should say!) on a daily diet of rice accompanied by a meat or fish dish and some form of coconut based vegetable. We groaned and moaned, but nevertheless ate what was put in front of us.
My mother, known for her superb culinary skills, had tried to impart her knowledge of making a scrumptious Chicken Stew (page 127) or lip smacking Duck Roast (page 135) but I resolutely stuck to my versions of insipid shepherd pies and tomatoey spaghetti bolognaise.
It was only after going away to University that I began to develop a liking for our regional food. Baked Beans on Toast was fast losing its bland appeal!

Moving to the United States and discovering an incompetent cook in my husband left me longing for my mother's (once deplored!) cooking and a desire to mimic her. I would spend ages on the phone with her, writing down detailed recipes on scraps of paper and attempting to make them later.

Lathika George's "The Kerala Kitchen" came as a complete joy to me. I love to read and I love to eat!

The cuisine of Kerala (a state located on the Southwestern part of India) is very unique and for Indians from other parts of India, just as unfamiliar as Roast Turkey and Candied Yams! Most dishes are rice and coconut based, seafood is preferred over meat or poultry and sour/spicy wins over sweet/mild.
Lathika George has managed to capture all of the popular dishes eaten by a typical Malayalee (native of Kerala) with a big nod to the state's Christian heritage.

This cookbook is an absolute delight to read and the recipes are authentic and user friendly. I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to try a different kind of Indian cuisine!

Essays on Freudian Psychology

This is a collection of essays by Adam Phillips that cover a variety of topics from a Freudian psychological viewpoint. The essays are generally well-written, erudite, humorous, and interesting, though occasionally he engages in bouts of nit-picking with other Freudian analysts. They are organized around a general theme of making the unexamined life conscious, often by asking questions such as "what is the unconscious problem than your belief solves for you?"

The book assumes a deep knowledge of Freud's writings, some clinical experience, and familiarity with later Freudian theorists such as D. W. Winnicott and Masud Kahn. However the essays are still entertaining and interesting for those readers without all of that background knowledge.

The writing is taut and slick. Love his intricate plot, told from the vantage points of several familiar characters.
I feel, that I know these people.
I read several of John Verdon ebooks, and I appreciate immensely his intrigues. The guessing of who's done it will keep you incapable of leaving the book.

Misterio que se estanca

La novela policial requiere de acciones que vayan avanzando, dando la sensación de que el investigador se acerca paulatinamente a la resolución del misterio y que, por lo tanto, cada vez hay más peligro y tensión. En esta novela, eso está bastante logrado al comienzo. El misterio es atractivo, lo ritual del asesino en serie resulta llamativo y la figura del detective, con su pasado a cuestas, resulta cercana y creíble. El problema es que a lo largo de la historia el misterio parece no avanzar. El detective razona admirablemente para rebatir las teorías ajenas, pero nunca logra elaborar con claridad una propia. El peligro no se percibe como una amenaza cercana y las víctimas que se van acumulando son personajes lejanos para el lector. Creo que en cierto momento la historia se estanca y la solución al conflicto se da por una acción poco racional -lo que menos se espera de un detective literario-. Resulta fácil de leer, los diálogos son fluidos y resulta una lectura amena. Pero a mi parecer, falla en aspectos centrales de lo que se supone es el género detectivesco.

De las tres novelas esta fue la que mas me gusto mantiene la intriga y el suspenso desde que empiezas el primer capitulo hasta el final que por cierto me sorprendio saber quien era el asesino, lo recomiendo y si les gusta las novelas policiacas en serie esta es una de ellas

Lifelong fan of the the One pot!

I have to admit that I am a little obsessed with all the various one pot styles of cooking. Starting probably way (way!) back in college, when I literally had only one pot to cook in, I made an infinite varieties of what came to be known as "stoop" (ie not quite stew, not quite soup). Now, thankfully, while I can afford more than one pot to cook in, I still am partial to only using one for a meal. Maybe it is the comfort of all that goodness cooking together, or maybe I am just too lazy to do a lot of cleaning up after dinner. Either way, needless to say, I have a lot of practice in this cooking method.

I will start off by saying that One Pot: 120+ Easy Meals is a worthwhile addition to my somewhat overburdened and sagging cookbook shelf. While my all time favorite I think will continue to be my handful of tagine recipes given to me decades ago by a family friend, or the timeless and always wonderful The Clay Pot Cookbook, One Pot gives some really nice approaches in a variety of styles that are accessible to almost any level of expertise in the kitchen.

Since being given One Pot, I have worked my way through several dozen of the recipes (did I mention I really like one pot recipes? lol). Most were just about dead-on as recipes go. The Kale and Tuscan Bean Soup was a particular favorite for my husband, who is not usually one for either anything Tuscan nor bean- (he has had an anti-Tuscan bias since I made him watch The English Patient, and the bean problem, well, you know..) The Mac and cheese varieties (yes, tried all of them!), were of course universally loved by my grandson and his friends, and the adults did not exactly shy away from it either. I was a little less crazy about the Beef Stroganoff, but it was a reasonable foundation that I felt just required some doctoring from the spice cabinet.

Your taste of course will vary from mine in assessing individual recipes, but as always you will need to adjust spices and flavors to suit your own preferences.

All in all, One Pot is a very good introduction to the art of one pot cooking (and thus one-pot clean up!). If you have not worked with a pressure cooker before, here is a nice opportunity to try one out (buy a newer model, they are so much more safe than the old ones we used to use!). Likewise having a good roasting pan will make your efforts so much more pleasant for entertaining or just filling your house with wonderful aromas and good healthy foods.

I have probably rambled long enough about this now. I have a new Korean stone bowl that just arrived, and I have a date with some hot pot recipes!

A cookbook you'll use day after day!

Let me begin this review by saying that I have four recipes from One Pot: Salmon with Kale and Cabbage, Baked Rice with Sausage and Broccoli Rabe, Pork Chops with Cabbage and Bacon, and Sausage with Acorn Squash and Onions. They have all been very good, the pork chop recipe was incredible.

One Pot is divided into 7 sections: Dutch Oven, Skillet and Saute Pan, Slow Cooker, Roasting Pan and Baking Dish, Pressure Cooker, Stockpot and Saucepan, and Desserts. I like this method of organization because I frequently choose or look for recipes based on the technique or equipment that I am wanting to use. Each section opens with a small introduction to the equipment used. For example in the Dutch Oven Section, it goes into materials used in their construction and ideal size.

I have marked practically the entire book to try, but here a three from each section to give an idea of the scope of the recipes (plus they are all recipes that sound good to me!)

Dutch Oven: Chicken and Dumplings, Carnitas Tacos, and Pork Stew with Potatoes and Rosemary.

Skillet and Saute Pan: Shrimp with Tomatoes and Orzo, Mushroom Cheddar Frittata, and Skillet Macaroni with Bacon and Gouda.

Slow Cooker: Garlic Chicken with Barley, Pot Roast with Sweet Potato and Prunes, and Spiced Chicken Stew with Carrots.

Roasting Pan and Baking Dish: Spatchcocked Chicken with Herbs and Lemon, Spiced Cod with Couscous, and Mexican Style Lasagna.

Pressure cooker: Beef Barley and Vegetable Stew, Risotto with Mushrooms and Thyme, and Irish Beef Stew with Stout.

Stockpot and Saucepan: Warm Quinoa and Chicken Salad, Sweet Potato and Sausage Soup, and Pasta with Farm-Stand Vegetables.

Desserts: Rustic Apple Tart, No-Churn Coffee Chocolate-Chip Ice Cream, and Fruit Skillet Cake.

This is a cookbook that anyone can use day after day. These are simple, easy meals. Easy enough for weeknights, but filled with enough flavor for the weekends! I have over 200 cookbooks and this will definitely be at the top as one of my most used.

Everything One Pot

This book was so much more than I expected. As the mother of 3 young children, I'm always looking for ways to simplify dinner time, because it's the most hectic time of day. I thought this cookbook would be perfect, as I love stovetop meals that only take one pot, making clean up SO much faster and easier. What I wasn't expecting was a whole variety of recipes - not just stovetop meals. The book includes slow cooker meals, pressure cooker meals, Dutch oven, roasting, etc. It really is a great guide to all things one pot!

The photos are beautiful, in true Martha Stewart fashion. And there is a photo of every recipe, which is always a plus for a cookbook. If I could choose one criticism, it would only be that some of the recipes are too sophisticated for some people in my family. But I made the Skillet Turkey Pie and we all loved it. I think this book will be a welcome addition to my library.

One of the best books around but not for the beginner, advanced beginner ok, you need to know how to draw somewhat but I love the way things are explained and so happy I got it to home my skills. It works you through composition, light and shadow and different mediums that you can draw with. I would give it 6 stars if I could.

Good for beginners...

Vic Bearcroft's Drawing and Painting Wild Animals is good for people who want to learn how to paint in acrylics or draw in colored or graphite pencil, though not all of his art is as good as the cover image may lead you to think. Many of the drawings/paintings in this book appear blurry or incomplete, especially his pastel paintings, but, since I have practically no talent when it comes to acrylics, and am starting to work with colored pencil, I find this to be a good book on both subjects. If you are looking for a decent all-round animal art instruction book then this is one of the better ones, especially for beginning artists.

and that's not a good thing. But

i read this with hope and sadness. I had seen a painting 'drawn' from this some time ago and had to get the book for my own. Much has changed these essays were written. For instance, with everyone so "connected" we don't even eat the same way anymore, and that's not a good thing. But, the conviction, perhaps a plea these days, that Nature is irreplaceable and necessary is real and as sincere as it was when any of these essays were written. It's personal.

A Great Collection

Berger never wastes a word. I have been a devotee of his since the early 70s and caught most of the essays included in this slim volume, elsewhere. But this is an inspired packaging by the people at Penguin for their Great Ideas series. The title piece alone is insightful enough to warrant a re-read. Ape Theatre, the marvellous contemplation on aesthetics in, White Bird; The Eaters and the Eaten, on consumer society...all these hang together, even intercept. He is a writer of great elegance and will brook no casual reading. This is a good place to get acquainted with the master and an excellent gift for a friend.

Berger's essays about our relationship with animals are charming and well-written.

This book, another in the Penguin "Great Ideas" series, charmed me unexpectedly. Like all the books in the series, it is (appealingly?) short* (100 pages), but the quality of the writing more than compensates for its brevity.

Perhaps shamefully, I had never heard of John Berger before stumbling across this collection of his work. A little googling points to a fairly extensive body of work, which I look forward to exploring further. The book comprises eight essays, one poem, and a concluding vignette of the philosopher Ernst Fischer, a personal friend of the author. As the title essay suggests, most of the pieces deal with the relationship between humans and animals; they range from the gently playful "A Mouse Story" (a man, a mousetrap, and several murine protagonists), to more elegaic pieces such as "The White Bird" and "Field", both of which use the commonplace (a wooden bird carved by a peasant of the Haute Savoie, a field near the author's home) as starting point for more general rumination on aesthetics. The poem "They are the Last" is a surprisingly moving appreciation of cows. Perhaps because of the quality of the writing, each of these pieces has a low-key charm which I enjoyed thoroughly.

But the meat of the book (no pun intended) lies in the three longer essays: "Why Look at Animals?", "Ape Theatre", and "The Eaters and the Eaten", which, taken together, provide a thoughtful, unexpectedly engrossing, investigation of the relationship between humans and animals. Although Berger's purpose is undoubtedly didactic, precisely what I found appealing about these essays is the lack of any kind of preaching tone. In contrast to, say, someone like Peter Singer, whose general air of moral superiority I personally find completely offputting, and whose preachy tone diminishes the cogency of his arguments, Berger's approach is far more low-key. And because of that, more effective, at least for this reader. Whereas the extremity of some of Singer's arguments just makes me fling him aside after a while, Berger writes with a sly charm that is beguiling, with the result that I found these essays thought-provoking, and not easily dismissed.

Which, I imagine, would please the author. I did not expect to like this collection of essays nearly as much as I did. Try them for yourself - you might feel the same way.

*: I think the marketing folks at Penguin are quite smart - they know full well that a 300-page volume that advertised itself as containing "great ideas" would be a tough sell. Whereas the slim volumes that they have assembled are actually pretty appealing, even if some (Orwell's essay on "Books v Cigarettes" or on "The Decline of the English Murder", for example), though not without a certain charm, seem to stretch the definition of "great ideas" more than a little

Adult/High School-Clear, colorful maps and a thorough, yet concise text make this a work to be considered wherever colonial American history is studied. Although the emphasis is on the Revolution, the scope is much broader-from settlement to 1820. Chronologically arranged, each chapter opens with an overview, followed by readable double-page spreads on the time periods, specific battles, pertinent individuals or peoples, and other relevant issues. Maps are large enough to show troop movement. Legends are clear with dissimilar symbols. Portraits, illustrations, and other graphics are clearly identified. About the Author
Ian Barnes is Principal Lecturer and Programme Leader of the History Department at the University of Derby. He is the author of The History Atlas of Europe, The History Atlas of Asia, and The Enlarged European Union. Charles Royster is Boyd Professor of History at Louisiana State University. He is the author of The Fabulous History of Dismal Swamp Company: A Study of George Washington's Times; A Revolutionary People at War; and Light Horse Harry Lee and the Legacy of the American Revolution.

A Sloppily Prepared Book

Instead of heeding the comments of earlier reviewers, I bought this book. It was a case of hope trumping good sense and I made a mistake. I admit it. My objections to the book's quality and accuracy agree with all those before me who gave it poor reviews. Here are some other examples the reviewers might have warned about: 1) Though this book is titled "The Historical Atlas of the American Revolution", there are maps and articles for periods and events beyond the geographic and temporal scope of the revolution. The space could have been better devoted to the revolution; 2) H. Charles McBarron's picture of the Battle of Guildford Courthouse is captioned as being a painting by Howard Pyle that shows the American line at Bunker Hill; 3) There's no map for the important Battle of Long Island; 4) The map for First Battle of Trenton is grossly inaccurate. It shows large numbers of Hessians seemingly escaping to the east while ignoring American envelopment of the Hessians south and east of Trenton; and 5) There's no overview map for the southern campaigns. I could go on but why waste good time on a poor book?

A Horrible Disappointment

In the middle of reading a wonderful book on the American Revolution recently (Setting the World Ablaze--Washington, Adams, Jefferson and the American Revolution) I found myself wanting more geographic details than my modern atlas provided, so I sent off for the newly published Historical Atlas of the American Revolution.What a waste of money and fine printing.
The format of the book is generally to have a two-page spread on each topic with copy (plus some inane, barely relevant graphic) on the left and a map on the right. Good idea, bad realization.
The person who wrote the boring, stiff, choppy copy apparently never talked to the person who did the maps. As a result sometimes the words are relevant to the maps and sometimes not. For instance, the spread on Density of Population Settlement has a rambling, oblique discussion of settlement, while the map shows areas settled by 1700, 1740, and 1760. I guess we are to assume that the areas settled the longest are the densest, but that is hardly enlightening. It also shows two mysterious areas to the west of Virginia labeled Vandalia and Transylvania, but there is nary a word in the book about either.
Even when the copy is somewhat germane to the map at hand there are maddening lapses. For instance, the spread entitled King George's War discusses its European causes and events in Nova Scotia, but ignores George Washington and his capture at Fort Necessity (though the map does show it). But this map, and all the others I looked at have glaring omissions. The copy mentions the Mohawk Indians but they're not shown on the map. That might be ok if you knew the Mohawks were part of the Iriquois which are listed. Likewise the Cherokee nation country is mentioned in the copy but not listed on the map; ditto the Ohio Valley. This goes on and on. As I said before, it's like the writer and cartographer never met or talked. A good editor should have straightened that out. Maybe there was no editor. I quit reading after I got to the battle of Lexingon and Concord and the text mentioned, but the map left out, Punkatasset Hill and Harvard College.
Perhaps it got better later on. But, for 40 bucks I expected something a lot more accurate, exciting and informative.

Historical Atlas of the American Revolution

I am an Australian of 60 plus years so knowledge of the American Revolution has been limited to that which was learned over 45 years ago at school, and then that which has been gathered from the news and other books since. I have found the chronological order of the battles interesting and the diagrams to be most helpful.
