About the Author
Dr John Andreas Olsen is a tutor and researcher at the Royal Norwegian Air Force Academy, where he lectures and writes on military theory, strategy and doctrine. He received his master's degree in British studies in 1995 from the University of Warwick (England) and his doctorate on 'Operation Desert Storm' in 2000 from De Montfort University. He began his military career in 1987, has recently attended the Royal Norwegian Air Force College in Oslo and is currrently working on two projects on the Gulf War of 1990-1991

Very fine study of the 1991 strategic air campaign

This is a study of the strategic air campaign in Desert Storm that is based on the author's academic thesis. It was written in the late 1990s and thus does not reflect the experiences of the Iraq War after 2003. The discussion of the planning of the strategic air campaign is excellent. He covers a lot of the same ground in his subsequent book on John Warden, and of course the essential work on the planning of the Desert Storm air campaign remains Diane Putney's "Airpower Advantage".

Perhaps even more useful is the analysis of the Iraqi power structure. The purpose of this analysis was to show why the strategic air campaign failed to decapitate the regime or destabilize it so that Saddam could be overthrown internally. I have not seen anything like that analysis anywhere else. I suspect that nobody in Washington read this analysis before we invaded in 2003, which was too bad, because the planning and execution of "Iraqi Freedom" could certainly have benefited from it.

I got this book from a library. I don't think I want to pay the crazy amounts of money they want for it new ($50 to $100 or $200). If you can get it used for under $20, that is probably reasonable in my opinion.

INSIGHTFUL LOOK INTO A RESIDENTS LIFE

As a retired medical transcriptionist, I found this book enjoyable and well written. What was really "scary" to me was the fact that these Residents work so many long back to back shifts caring for humans and making life threatening decisions regarding someones body. The AMA really needs to change and stop this practice of working residents and interns on back to back 24 hour shifts. Who does it help? A "good read" for anyone who has worked with doctors and nurses in hospitals.

A healing touch for a weary reader

"I have tried, more than anything else, to be faithful to the inner life of medicine."

Terrence Holt wrote "Internal Medicine" over a period of ten years after he completed his residency. Many doctors who produce books about how they honed their skills insist that everything they tell us is basically true, except that they changed names and identifying characteristics to protect their patients' privacy. Holt, on the other hand, claims that he can do justice to his subject only " by transforming it into a parable." The author creates scenarios that encapsulate what he learned during his training. The patients he describes are "assemblages drawn from a variety of sources, compiled from multiple cases."

This introduction almost persuaded me to put "Internal Medicine" down without going further. After all, I crave verisimilitude--not flights of fancy--in works of non-fiction. I persisted out of curiosity, and found Holt to be a gifted and sensitive writer who captures the terror, uncertainty, exhaustion, and exhilaration that medical trainees must feel while they stumble along, trying to acquire experience, knowledge, and self-confidence.

Holt evokes the vulnerability of a patient who is wheeled into the emergency room and left on a gurney for hours, has terrible symptoms and waits in trepidation for his prognosis, and senses that that a cure is unlikely--there may nothing more that anyone can do. In addition, Dr. Holt takes us on rounds; consults with other doctors and nurses; wracks his brain to come up with correct diagnoses and a sensible treatment plans; responds to codes; tackles the unenviable task of informing families that their loved ones have passed on; and uneasily navigates the twilight zone between life and death.

There are also bizarre passages about uncooperative individuals who are both mentally and physically ill, a tormented oncologist who blithely ignores the Hippocratic Oath, and a woman whose face is disfigured, but derives comfort from the sight and sound of birds. Certain sections are contrived and melodramatic, and may displease readers who prefer realism to fabrication. Still, "Internal Medicine" packs a wallop. It is a powerful, engrossing, and often dispiriting exploration of how physicians deal with (or fail to deal with) the demands of their challenging profession.

A logical consequence of this argument is that the most effective way of combating terrorism in Pakistan lies in addressing the underlying political, social and economic problems facing the country.

After exploring the root causes of terrorism in Pakistan, the author goes on to relate the historical narrative of the development of the Pakistani state to the theories and questions raised by Critical Terrorism Studies (CTS) scholars. The book will therefore make an important contribution to CTS scholarship as well as presenting an analysis of the many complex factors that have shaped the rise of Pakistani terrorism.

The Editor: Maximilian C. Forte is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University, Canada. He received his Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Adelaide, Australia. In addition to articles in several journals, he is the author of Ruins of Absence, Presence of Caribs: (Post)Colonial Representations of Aboriginality in Trinidad and Tobago (2005). Creative, delicious smoothie recipes AND invaluable guide to easy, healthy lifestyle!

I'm a big fan of Julie Morris, I am so in love with her first book, "Superfood Kitchen", I cook from it almost every day and consider it the most valuable cookbook I own, so of course I was very excited to get my copy of "Superfood Smoothies"! I am truly amazed but not surprised that she turned out yet another masterfully written and beautifully composed book of awesome recipes. Not only are the smoothie recipes REALLY TASTY, but they are so creative and very thoughtfully concocted to maximize health, flavor, and texture. My favorites that I've tried so far are: cranberry orange (using frozen whole cranberries and OJ), acai pumpkin (yum! creative use for canned pumpkin puree), and cacao cream. There are so many more I can't wait to try!

I first started trying to turn around my health about a year ago by making green smoothies in my $30 blender, mixing frozen blueberries, banana, chia seeds, kale and almond milk every morning for breakfast. I have since upgraded to a vitamix, which makes it easier and more enjoyable to blend my daily smoothie! This book is helping me expand my smoothie repetoire so I can never, ever be bored with my smoothie!

I have also slowly expanded my superfood pantry over the last year, and wanted to pass on some tips for locating ingredients and finding good deals. Many of the negative reviews for this book seemed like the reason was because they couldn't find the ingredients or they were too expensive, which are completely bogus reasons for poorly reviewing this incredible book!! They are easy to find AND affordable if you have access to the internet!!! I live in an extremely rural isolated area, 1.5 hours drive to the nearest sizeable town with health food stores, but I buy most of the superfood ingredients online and I get much better deals than I would in stores. Also keep in mind that Navitas Naturals ins't the only brand that sells superfoods, Julie may promote them because she is their spokesperson, and they ARE a fantastic company, but I find that they have the MOST EXPENSIVE products on the market, and you don't get very much for the price. Another good brand that is more affordable is Sunfood Superfoods.

Nuts.com- Not only do they have awesome organic raw nuts and seeds of many varieties that I buy to make raw nut milks, they also sell many superfoods like spirulina, dried mulberries, yacon, cacao powder, acai powder, chia seeds, mesquite powder, wheatgrass powder, hemp protein powder, ect.

Amazon.com- I can find Sunfood Superfood brand products here, and have also found good deals from random other brands for everything from cacao powder, barley grass powder (starwest brand, similar to wheatgrass but often cheaper), acai powder, ect.

Vitacost.com - BEST DEAL ON HEMP SEEDS! 3 lb bag of Nutiva shelled hemp seeds for $34 - I keep a small jar on the counter to sprinkle on salads and use in recipes and store the rest in the freezer, the bag lasts me a long time! You can also find good deals on chia seeds and lots of other things

Swansonvitamins.com- They also have the same deal on the 3lb bag of Nutiva hemp seeds! Just ordered hemp seeds, chia seeds, cacao nibs, and camu powder from them.

Bottom line, if you buy this book (AND "Superfood Kitchen" while you're at it!), you are well on your way to make super nutritious MAGIC happen in your kitchen!!

Super amazing, super delicious and super nutritious

If you're a novice smoothie maker, you will really appreciate how Julie took the time to go through the steps of smoothie making in great detail and will be introduced to amazing smart combinations.
If you, like me, have been making smoothies pretty much everyday for the last 10 years, have exhausted your creativity to combine ingredients and could use some really unique, tasty and nutritious recipes, you will absolutely love this book.
Superfoods may sound foreign if you haven't used them before and you don't necessarily need to buy every single superfood out there, you can certainly leave out the superfood suggestions for many of the recipes and still end up with a vibrant and nutritious drink. Some of the superfoods can be expensive but a bit goes a long way. Julie provides excellent information on each superfood, how, where and what form to buy, benefits, serving size and substitutions.
I got this book on a Saturday and on the next day I basically ended up doing a smoothie day, each recipe I tried was so delicious, so full of flavor and was packed with so many nutrients that I kept wanting to try more recipes :-) Everything I've tried so far was absolutely amazing, really love this book, there are combinations of ingredients that I would have never though of after so many years making smoothies.
** Update: Yesterday I started to explore one of the chapters called superfood shots,they are small, highly condensed smoothies, what a fantastic idea! Yesterday I had one called 'Stress recovery', there is one for energy boost, one for fighting cold... Really interesting ideas!

Ingredients Hard to Find - Vegan Book

This is an exceptionally well-written book, and the layout is fantastic. It's easy to read, and making all the smoothies is straightforward. There are a lot of nice pictures throughout. This is a bit of a food snob book, however. I've never heard of most of the ingredients, and this book emphasizes, basically, the "evil" dairy products, and God forbid whey protein! So, no yogurt or milk in these smoothies - those are for people that don't know how to use calories wisely. To name the most commonly used ingredients in this book: dried white mulberry, sea buckthorn berries, lucuma powder, Medjool dates, dried goji berries, maqui berry powder, and camu berry powder.

It's written in a very friendly manner, and all of these weird-sounding ingredients are well-explained. But I wouldn't know where to begin to find them. If you buy them online, they are expensive. Sure, lucuma powder or goji berries may have more antioxidants than blueberries, but when I can find beautiful, fresh blueberries locally for a third the cost, I think I'll go with blueberries! It isn't written with a condescending tone, but it definitely thinks all other sources of vitamins and minerals from basic fruits and vegetables are for people living in the stone age.

The most disconcerting thing is when I went to buy these ingredients online, many reviewers were saying things such as "not supposed to be eaten raw" or "sent me to the hospital with bad skin reaction". I'll stick with what I know, and what's locally available! There are plenty of nutritious and organic fruits and vegetables around that are more suitable for healthy smoothies!

Never been more focused
By max power
I can't speak for other people since I have taken tons of lessons and read countless books. I also intermittently record my swing since feel in golf can be very deceiving (You tell me :)). After following the advice on how to practice, I am a lot more focus on the range. I no longer get upset but just keep repeating the drills over and over again. I won't give more details from this book; but it is definitely well written. Kudos! I can feel after the great habits have been formed, they will show up themselves in my swing - on the course.

Totally over priced

I own and like Eric's "The five keys to distance". Very well written and very informative. Plus the included CD. This "bookette", while somewhat informative, is a total rip off for the price. I looked for information on how many pages there were before my purchase, but didn't see any. While reading, I couldn't believe it, when it ended. I've read longer articles in Readers Digest! That's the last "book" of his I will order, and the last time I will order a book that doesn't list the number of pages on your site.

There's a few good ideas in this book, the best probably random block practice. That's enough to make it worth the price and the reading time. But I have the feeling it could have been better. Search for EJ on youtube, he's got a great speaking voice and he's very convincing.

About the Author
Arthur Sandeen is professor of higher education at the University of Florida. He was elected president of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) in 1977. Sandeen is the author of numerous articles and book chapters.

Margaret Barr is professor emerita in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. She is the author or editor of numerous books and monographs including The Handbook of Student Affairs Administration, Second Edition, with Mary K. Desler from Jossey-Bass.
Together Sandeen and Barr have over forty-five years combined experience as university vice-presidents prior to their retirement.

Aimed at the Higher Ed Student Affairs crowd - but well done.

Was required to have this for a graduate course. It is much easier and quicker reading than a lot of course texts. Overall it is a well done book. Definitely aimed at the higher ed student affairs crowd. Not sure it is a book to read for fun, but if you do read it, the authors do definitely provide some insight into the complexities of student affairs work.

I purchased this book to add insights into a paper I was writing for class and found it to be very helpful. The authors are informative and insightful and have a wealth of experiences that they bring to the perspectives in the book.
